    An electronic gauge that increases the speed and ease of measuring eggshell thickness is described. The performance of the electronic gauge was compared with that of more conventional methods (visual and mechanical) of thickness measurements. The new gauge reduced the measurement time by one-half and eliminated errors inherent in other measurement methods. The electronic gauge is suitable for automatic data recording and is relatively inexpensive.

    Because of the long distance between the last finishing mill and the X-ray Thickness Gauge, there was a long delay time for the AGC system to get the gauge error information feedback, which has some negative effect on the control of strip thickness, so the monitor AGC was not a control system in time. According to the virtual model fitted by true measured parameters, the Smith predictor in the monitor AGC was applied to predict the gauge error in the finishing mill and used this gauge error to control the strip rolling mill. As a result, not only the mill response to strip gauge error was mended and the control system stability was improved, but also the strip gauge precision was obviously improved when the Smith predictor was implied to the industrial site.

    Based on the fundamental of auto gauge control,combined with the characteristics of reversible single stand cold rolling mill,the project of gauge control system is brought forward.The feed forward AGC,Smith- predict monitor AGC,GM-AGC,gauge compensation during acceleration and deceleration in the gauge control sys- tem are detailed analyzed and studied.Aiming at the problems encountered in practical application,specific solve schemes are presented and executed in site.The application result indicates that the relative gauge error of product is within±1%,satisfying the requirement of production.

    The authors developed a new advanced laser scanning range finder. The width gauge consists of a pair of these range finders. Conventional gauges cannot measure the effective width of complexly shaped plate edges. However, the gauge measures both side profiles of a plate and calculates the effective width with an accuracy of +/- 1.5 mm. This new type of width gauge has been developed and tested at the plate rolling mill at Kashima Steel Works of Sumitomo Metal Industries Ltd.

    A method based on the least square(LS) is introduced to analyze and calculate the characteristic parameters of periodic exit gauge error of the rolling mill,and a new solution is proposed to control the rolling mill and realize the compensation for the exit gauge error.The simulation and the field data processing results suggest that this method could compute the periodic fluctuation of the exit gauge error including entrance gauge and rolling eccentricity quickly and accurately,compensate and control exit gauge of the rolling mill.

    When strip is rolled at a constant speed, errors in the finished thickness occur owing to changes in width, hardness, and thickness of the incoming material, in tensions applied to it, and to variations in friction in the roll gap. The gauge of strip may also vary when the mill speed is changed. A closed-loop regulator had been constructed to demonstrate, on a pilot-plant scale, a method of automatically controlling the gauge of sheet and strip rolled in hot and cold mills. A measure of the departure from gauge is obtained from simultaneous measurements of roll-load and the roll-setting, and correction is made by varying the position of the rolls. The controller is described together with experiments which demonstrate that the method is capable of consistent rolling to close tolerances in gauge.
