Four different electrodes were selected to hardfacing the key parts of railway.The hardness and microstructure of the hardfacing metal were analyzed.Meanwhile,the wear loss of the hardfacing metal was measured and the wear morphology of the hardfacing metal was observed by using stereomicroscope.The results shown that,the hardfacing metal of the high 20 chromium cast steel type compose a lot of primary and eutectic carbides.The hardness of the hardfacing metal is about HRC60,the wear property can be obviously improved when the carbide is fined and well-distributed.

Dilution of a hardfacing alloy by the substrate can cause significant reductions in the hardness and wear resistance of the deposited coating. Application of a second layer of hardfacing alloy is one of many techniques used to minimise dilution. However, research into the hardfacing of grey cast iron by spraying and welding processes to resist abrasive wear has shown that, in general, no benefit is derived from the application of two layers rather than one layer of alloy: application of the second layer therefore appears to be economically unwarranted.

The contribution presents the research results of hardfacing metals’ resistance in conditions of abrasive wear. Two types of hardfacing electrodes with a different chemical composition were used in the creation of three layers of hardfacing metals. The chemical composition of electrodes determines the difference in a hardface deposit structure. We have investigated the influence of mixing the base metal and a filler metal and the influence of hardfacing welds structure on the resistance against abrasive wear. The results of the experiments have showed that the intensity of wear is very dependent on the parameters of wear as well as the morphology structure of hardfacing metals.

The classification and method of hardfacing material,the nature of alloying elements and the formation characteristics of carbide of surfacing layer are summarized in this paper.Strengthening mechanism of iron-based hardfacing alloy,alloying elements in the role of surfacing layer and the morphology of abrasive wear were discussed in the meantime.Later wear resistant mechanisms of the iron-based hardfacing alloy was analyzed.Iron-based hardfacing alloy has a lot of advantages such as low cost,varieties,the intensity,the toughness,the abrasive resistance and impact resistance of surfacing layer are easily to be transformed.Iron-based hardfacing alloy has a good application prospect,and are becoming one of the most important aspects in current researches.

The hardfacing and heat treatment of hardfacing layers were conducted with two different hot roller hardfacing materials. The hardness,wear- resistance and chemical composition of hardfacing layers were detemined. The microstructures were observed by optical and SEM. All these give experimental foundation on choosing different hardfacing materials and technology.
