    Abstract:
Nitrogen (N) fertilizer management, especially postponing N topdressing can affect rice eating quality by regulating starch quality of superior and inferior grains, but the details are unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of N topdressing on starch structure and properties of superior and inferior grains in hybrid indica rice with different tastes and to clarify the relationship between starch structure, properties, and taste quality. Two hybrid indica rice varieties, namely the low-taste Fyou 498 and high-taste Shuangyou 573, were used as experimental materials. Based on 150 kg·N hm-2, three N fertilizer treatments were established: zero N (N0), local farmer practice (basal fertilizer: tillering fertilizer: panicle fertilizer=7:3:0) (N1), postponing N topdressing (basal fertilizer: tillering fertilizer: panicle fertilizer=3:1:6) (N2).The starch granules of superior grains were more complete, and the decrease in small granules content and the stability of starch crystals were a certain extent less than those of inferior grains. Compared with N1, under N2, low-taste and high-taste varieties large starch granules content were significantly reduced by 6.89%, 0.74% in superior grains and 4.26%, 2.71% in inferior grains, the (B2 + B3) chains was significantly reduced by 1.61%, 0.98% in superior grains, and 1.18%, 0.97% in inferior grains, both reduced the relative crystallinity and 1045/1022 cm-1, thereby decreasing the stability of the starch crystalline region and the orderliness of starch granules. N2 treatment reduced the ΔHgel of two varieties. These changes ultimately contributed to the enhancement of the taste values in superior and inferior grains in both varieties, especially the inferior grains. Correlation analysis showed that the average starch volume diameter (D[4,3]) and relative crystallinity were significantly positively correlated with the taste value of superior and inferior sgrains, suggesting their potential use as an evaluation index for the simultaneous enhancement of the taste value of rice with superior and inferior grains.Based on 150 kg·N hm-2, postponing N topdressing (basal fertilizer: tillering fertilizer: panicle fertilizer=3:1:6) promotes the enhancement of the overall taste value and provides theoretical information for the production of rice with high quality.

AbstrcatUsing the main varieties and region test ones altogether 33 rice varieties of LiaoNing province, the relationships between panicle traits and yield components were analyzed. The results showed that grain yield was closely correlated with panicle numbers,grains/panicle and spike setting density affect grain yield significantly, because panicle numbers and grains/panicle contributed to yield improvement while spike setting density have a negative effect on it.

Grain yield and yield component traits of 18 rice hybrids were evaluated under the system of rice intensification(SRI) and traditional cultivation(CK).The increasing yield effect of SRI to CK was very significantly and negatively correlated with the grains per panicle of hybrids. The hybrids with smaller panicle had positive yield effect under SRI because the grains per panicle and total number of spikelets increased. The hybrids with bigger panicle under SRI,however, showed negative yield effect due to largely declining in effective panicle and seed set percentage.A suggestible criterion is that the hybrids with grains per panicle less than 170 in CK,may more be suitable to SRI.The relation between soil fertility level and SRI effect was also investigated.

A pot culture experiment was conducted to study the effects of soil water potentials at ranges from-30 to(-35) kPa,-60 to-65 kPa and 0 kPa(check) during different developmental stages on panicle characters and grain yield by(using) two rice varieties Shangyu 397 and Suijing 3 as materials. The treatments at panicle-formation period had the greatest effect on panicle characters and the panicle number under the treatments was significantly more than that in control. The panicle length, numbers of panicle nodes and branches under the treatments during panicle-formation period were also significantly more than those under the control and the treatments during the other periods. However, the difference of panicle number between two soil water potentials was not significant among all the treatments at each treatment stage. The grain yields under the treatments during panicle-formation period were significantly lower than that in control.Obvious effects of soil water potential on grain yields under the treatments at the tillering stage and one to ten days after heading were founded.Panicle length, numbers of panicle nodes and branches were significantly positively correlated with the yield of the middle-position grain and inferior grain.

The experiment utilized the split-plot design with fertilizers as main plots and plant density as subplots,to study the characteristics of panicle and grain structure matched with a yield of more than 9t/ hm~2 for the new hybrid rice combination Teyou 649.The results showed that there was obvious difference between productive panicles derived from different nodes in terms of contribution to the yield. The contribution rate of the panicles from different nodes derived tillers was like this: the panicles from lower node tillers the panicles from secondary tillers the main panicle. The percentage of the panicles from lower node tillers was the most with 62%~73%,that of secondary tillers was 20% and the main panicle was 15%.Moreover,with fertilizer and planting density increasing, the contribution of the main panicle to the yield was increasing.

Abstract Background In rice, panicle apical abortion is a common phenomenon that usually results in a decreased number of branches and grains per panicle, and consequently a reduced grain yield. A better understanding of the molecular mechanism of panicle abortion is thus critical for maintaining and increasing rice production. Results We reported a new rice mutant panicle apical abortion 3 ( paa3 ), which exhibited severe abortion of spikelet development on the upper part of the branches as well as decreased grain size over the whole panicle. Using mapping-based clone, the PAA3 was characterized as the LOC_ Os04g56160 gene, encoding an H + -ATPase . The PAA3 was expressed highly in the stem and panicle, and its protein was localized in the plasma membrane. Our data further showed that PAA3 played an important role in maintaining normal panicle development by participating in the removal of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in rice. Conclusions Our studies suggested that PAA3 might function to remove ROS, the accumulation of which leads to programmed cell death, and ultimately panicle apical abortion and decreased seed size in the paa3 panicle.

Rice panicle architecture affects grain number per panicle and thereby grain yield. Many genes involved in control of panicle architecture have been identified in the past decades. According to their effect on phenotype, these genes are divided into three categories: panicle branch and lateral spikelets, multifloret spikelets, and panicle type. We review these genes, describe their genetic regulatory network, and propose a strategy for using them in rice breeding. These findings on rice panicle architecture may facilitate related studies in other crops.

The panicle characters of 8 rice varieties which have same primary branches were analyzed. The results are as follows: A close loop of grain yield per plant, panicle number per plant and grain weight per panicle was formed and the three yield components were correlated by way of total length of primary branches and panicle length. The distributions of grain number on primary branches, unfilled spikelets and grain weights were uniform at all nodal points of panicle axis and the differences of distributions were not distinct among the varieties. The superior part of distribution of the primary branch length were divided into three types: middle-lower panicle, middle panicle and middle-upper panicle. The numbers of secondary branches and grains showed that the distributions were like shuttles and their maximum values occured on middle or middle-low part of the panicles. The seed setting rate of secondary branches of upper panicles was more than that of middle part, and even more than that of lower part.

With two high-yielding hybrid rice combinations Shanyou 63 and Liangyoupeijiu as check,18 combinations with big panicle are chosen to study the relationships between yield components and yield. The results showed that:(1) A very significant increase in grain weight per plant(GWPP) of Super high-yielding combinations mainly results from more panicles per plant(PPP).(2) The order of contribution to GWPP was panicles per plant, filled grains per panicle(FGPP),1000-grain weight(KGW),spikelets per panicle(SPP),plumping degree(PD) filled grain rate(FGR).(3) GWPP has positive correlation with PPP and FGPP at 0.01significant level, with FGR at 0.05 significant level.(4)On the background of big panicle hybrid rice GWPP has positive partial correlation with PPP,KGW and PD at 0.01 significant level, which means any increase in these yield components can increase yield.

Effects of different concentration exogenous GA_(3) on the panicle traits were studied by using erect and curved panicle types of rice as materials. The results showed that the less difference between the panicle types was found with the different concentration exogenous GA_(3) treatment, but spraying different concentration exogenous GA_(3) at the different growth stage apparently increased plant height. And exogenous GA_(3) increased the length of panicle at the panicle initiation stage.
