Abstract:
In the current social conditions, the married couple becomes extremely vulnerable and its evolution is often disrupted. In order to ensure an optimal functionality of the marital dyad, the need to identify intervention strategies and develop programs designed to help couples overcome the obstacles they face in daily interactions, shifting the focus towards awareness and focusing on the positive aspects of the marital dyad, is required. In this article, the methods of psychological intervention for harmonizing couple relationships are presented, based on the positivization of the perceptions of the spouses and the relationship. A sample of a session from the proposed program is also presented. The results of the program show the positive impact of the strategies applied to improve dyadic interactions, thus confirming the effectiveness of the psychological intervention program used. Keywords:

This research was designed to identify anticipated and actual postpartum concerns about the marriage relationship during the period of transition to parenthood. It also investigated: (1) the accuracy of prediction of postpartum concerns by the prenatal group; (2) states of consensus within the marital dyad regarding the importance of postpartum concerns; and (3) the relationship between communication about the concerns and the relative importance of concerns. Twenty-two couples expecting their first child were randomly assigned to either the prenatal or postpartum interview groups. Husbands and wives individually rank-ordered 35 postpartum concerns from Most Important to Least Important and estimated how their spouses would rank the concerns. Husbands and wives also indicated the three concerns they discussed the most and the three they discussed the least. Couples tended to discuss most often those concerns they ranked most important. However, there were only moderate levels of agreement on the importance of concerns, discrepancies between perceived agreement and actual agreement, and low to moderate levels of accuracy in estimating the importance of concerns for spouses.

Research is reported which examines the relationship between marital satisfaction and amount of communication in a marital dyad. Consideration is given to various topics of communication which are commonly addressed by marital dyads and to the impact of biological sex on these relationships. Results indicate that highly satisfied couples engage in significantly m ore communication, particularly on certain topics, than do less satisfied couples. Couples with low satisfaction levels engage in a low level of communication on most of the topics which are commonly addressed by married couples. Speculation concerning causation is addressed.

An attempt is made to determine whether marital interaction is related to the health and well-being of husbands and wives and, if such a relationship exists, to explore the nature of the relationship. The dimensions of marital interaction of interest include cohesion, companionship, cooperation, and consensus. Cohesion is manifest in the feelings a couple has about their relationship. Companionship and cooperation are seen in a couple's joint activities. A shared outlook on life represents consensus.

A myocardial infarction can result in disrupting the entire family system and requires reorganization and adaptation in order to ensure the proper functioning of marriage. Study is aiming to compare functioning of marital dyad before and after myocardial infarction from perspective of patient’s spouse. Furthermore, the study takes into account gender differences in the assessment of the dyad relationships. The respondents (60 spouses of patients - 17 men, 43 women) assessed the functioning of the marital dyad using the Family Assessment Questionnaire (modified by Cierpka). The first group of respondents was tested in the period immediately after a heart attack, and the spouses assessed the period of functioning before the onset of a heart attack. The second group was tested during the period of over one year after a heart attack. The results in both groups show a satisfactory level of marital relationships. Spouses in the second group assessed the overall marital functioning worse, as well as functioning in four dimensions, as compared with the assessment made by the respondents in the first group. Gender differences were also reported. Conclusion: From spouse’s perspective marital dyad functioning after myocardial infarction is worse than before that. One of the reasons for such situation could be near death experience of the spouse and necessity for reorganization of family life. Family context is very important for recovery after myocardial infarction and it seems to be sensible to include patient’s spouse to psychotherapeutic work. Furthermore, marital relations were more negatively assessed by women

Objective: this study assessed dyadic adjustment and psychological morbidity in type 2 diabetic patients and their partners, focusing on the role of gender. Methods: 214 diabetic patients and their partners participated in the cross-sectional study and were assessed on psychological morbidity (HADS) and marital adjustment (RDAS). Data was analyzed using dyadic analysis, a statistical process that studies the patient/partner dyads simultaneously. Results: results revealed that the negative relationship between dyadic adjustment and psychological morbidity in female patients was stronger than in male diabetic patients or in partners of male diabetic patients. On the other hand, the relationship between dyadic adjustment and psychological morbidity in partners of diabetic men was stronger than the same relationship in partners of diabetic women. Conclusion: since gender is a moderator, it is important to attend to the different needs of female and male patients and the education of diabetic patients should be centered on the patient/partner dyad.

This study examined gender differences in the configuration of components of intimacy in marriage and in the relationship of marriage to depression in a community sample of 260 men and women. We hypothesized that women's report of marital intimacy would include a distinct self-disclosure component, whereas this would be part of companionship in men's report of intimacy. Also, using self-in-relation theory, we hypothesized that self-esteem level would mediate the relationship between marital quality and depression for women but would moderate this relationship for men. Both predictions were upheld, suggesting a need to reformulate current models of the role of marital quality in depression to better capture the influence of gender.
