The author has made a comparative studies on the anti-diabetic action by the intravenous administration of the sodium mesoxalate only once or for a period of a week into the normal and the alloxan diabetic rabbits as a method of treatment, and found the following results;(1) Blood sugar in normal and alloxan diabetic rabbits decreased slightly or moderately by injection of one dose of sodium mesoxalate.(2) No decrease of the blood sugar content noted with an excess dosage of sodium mesoxalate.(3) The lowest blood sugar level after injection of this drug appeared in earlier stage (one hour after injection) in the majority of normal rabbits, while in the majority of alloxan rabbits, the appearance was at the later period (four to six hours after the administration)(4) In alloxan diabetic rabbits treated with suitable dose of this drug for seven days, fasting blood sugar values and daily urine sugar excretion decreased definitely.

Objective To observe the effect of Sanling Jiangtang capsules on the experimental diabetes rats that caused by streptozotocin(STZ) and by alloxan, and on blood sugar and sugar tolerance in normal rats. Method STZ-induced rats and alloxan-induced rats were administrated of Sanling Jiangtang capsules(three concentrations) for 5 days and 10 days, respectively. Then the values of blood sugar and of sugar tolerance were observed. Results Sanling Jiangtang capsules can significently reduce the values of blood sugar in alloxan-induced diabetes rats(P0.01); and high-concentration and middle-concentration can clearly deminish the blood sugar level in STZ-induced diabetes rats(P0.05); as far as normal rats, the high-concentration and middle-concentration also have the falling effect(P0.01, P0.05). The middle-concentration can decrease the value of sugar tolerance in normal rats. Conclusion The above results suggest that Sanling Jiangtang capsules have preventive effect on normal rats, alloxan-induced diabetes rats, and STZ-induced diabetes rats.

OBJECTIVE To observe the effect of lowering blood sugar about the four different extracts of Hubei Maidong on alloxan-induced diabetic rats.METHODS Alloxan-induced diabetic rats were respectively fed with the total polysaccharides, total saponins and total extract prepared from Hubei Maidong, and delta tablets (Gliclazide tablets). Blood sugar levels at different times.RESULTS The four different extracts from Hubei Maidong could all lower the blood sugar of alloxan-induced diabetic rats with different degrees.CONCLUSION Hubei Maidong can be used for the treatment of diabetic.

The present study was carried out to evaluate the antidiabetic activity of Terminalia catappa bark extracts in alloxan induced diabetic rats for 21 days period of study. The bark extract at a dose of (400mg/kg) exhibited significant anti-hyperglycemic activity and improvement in parameters like body weight and lipidprofile which shows significant p<0.001, on compared with normal control rats during treatment period

Terminalia catappa has been used traditionally in some African countries as shade tree and to a large extent in managing diverse medical ailments including infectious diseases. This study was designed to elucidate the phytochemical constituents and antibacterial activity of the leaf extracts of the plant. The leaves were air dried, powdered and extracted using 95% ethanol and water. The extracts were then screened for preliminary phytochemical constituents and antibacterial susceptibility testing using cup plate method on nutrient agar. The extracts revealed the presence of carbohydrates, tannins, cardiac glycosides, flavonoids, saponins, terpenes and alkaloids. The antibacterial screening of the extracts against clinical isolates of Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Klebsiella species showed a dose dependent inhibitory activity. Gentamicin was used as positive control. The antibacterial activity of the extract with respect to different strains and positive control was significant which justifies its traditional use as an anti-bacterial agent.

This study evaluated anticancer potential of three Terminalia species, Terminalia muelleri, Terminalia bellerica, and Terminalia laxiflora and also their phytochemical content were determined. Anticancer potential of the plant extracts was measured according to MTT assay. The results showed that T. muelleri methanolic extract was active against breast cancer cell line with IC50 40 µg/mL. T. bellerica methanolic extract exerted cytotoxic effects only against colon cancer and liver cancer cell lines with IC50 of 50 and 15µg/mL, respectively. While T. laxiflora methanolic extract did not inhibit the proliferation of all cancer cell lines tested. Phytochemical investigation of the three plant species proved the presence of carbohydrates, flavonoids, tannins, and triterpenes. The methanolic extracts of T. muelleri and T. bellerica had a significant anticancer activity and so further phytochemical study to isolate and identify the bioactive molecules responsible for the observed anticancer activity is necessary.

Objective To establish suitable diabetic rats models. Methods Twenty-two healthy rats, weighed 180~240g, were randomly allocated to experimental groups 1~3, and a control group. The experimental groups 1~3 were intraperitoneally injected with alloxan 150mg/kg, 175mg/kg and 200mg/kg, respectively. The blood sugar was detected 48 hours after the injection. Results In laboratory groups 1~3, the blood sugar levels were significantly higher than that in the control group (P0.01); the blood sugar in group 3 was higher than those in groups 2 and 1 (P0.01); group 2 higher than group 1 (P0.01). Conclusion The establishment of diabetic rats models by intraperitoneal injection with alloxan is an easy and simple method. The elevation of blood sugar might be correlated with the rats weight and ages.

In view of suggested anti diabetic potential, effect of aqueous and cold extracts of Terminalia Catappa Linn (Combretaceae) leaves, on fasting blood sugar levels and serum biochemical analysis in alloxan-induced diabetic rats was investigated. All the extracts of Terminalia Catappa produced a significant anti diabetic activity at dose levels of 1/5th of their lethal doses. Concurrent histological studies of the pan-creas of these animals showed regeneration by aqueous and cold extracts which were earlier necrosed by alloxan.
