Abstract Passion is a pervasive concept in the field of work. Workers aspire to be passionate in the hope of finding meaning and satisfaction from their professional lives, whereas employers dream of passionate employees to ensure organizational performance. Are these hopes and aspirations supported by scientific knowledge? Is there a darker side to passion for work that workers and organizations should be aware of? By reviewing the major theories of passion while focusing on the dominant theory, the dualistic model of passion, which distinguishes between two types of passion (harmonious and obsessive), this volume provides a comprehensive understanding of passion for work. In doing so, this book addresses the origin of the concept and its theoretical issues, how passion for work can be developed, what the consequences to be expected at the individual and organizational level are, and how passion for work can shed new light on contemporary issues in the workplace. Passion for Work: Theory, Research, and Applications synthesizes a vast body of existing research in the area, provides insights into new and exciting research avenues, and explores how current knowledge on passion for work can be applied in work settings to fulfill workers’ and employers’ hopes and aspirations about passion.

Abstract This chapter addresses the question: What do we know, and what don’t we know about passion at work? One key objective of this final chapter is to provide a brief synopsis of the key findings reported by the various authors in this volume. The chapter summarizes the consensual definitions that have emerged regarding passion and its two major forms—obsessive passion and harmonious passion. It highlights factors that produce passion as well as those that result from passion. Especially, the differences associated with obsessive passion and harmonious passion are highlighted. Different predictors and different outcomes are associated with each form of passion. In addition, findings associated with individual, organizational, and macro levels of analysis are summarized. Different relationships with these two forms of passion are manifest across different levels of analysis. A second objective is to articulate some of what we do not yet know about passion. The chapter highlights some of the important research questions that can help guide research on passion in the future. This discussion includes issues regarding the development of passion, causal relationships between passion and certain outcomes, forms and manifestations of passion, and individual and contextual differences associated with passion.

In Chapter 4 we focus on the outcomes of entrepreneurial passion in terms of both profits and perils that can result from it. These profits and perils depend both on the type of passion the entrepreneur experiences (e.g., obsessive or harmonious) as well as the extent of that passion (e.g., how passionate they are about being an entrepreneur), and the targets of that passion (e.g., passion for inventing new products vs. passion for founding a new firm). As part of that discussion we incorporate not only the entrepreneur's experience of passion but also how the passion they display to entrepreneurial stakeholders can lead to both productive and unproductive outcomes. We make important recommendations for how we should carry the study of potential profits and perils of both experienced and displayed passion forward in more conceptually and empirically precise ways.

Abstract What should we make of the 18th-century practice of reworking passion settings for performances in various times and places? In Bach's time passion settings were freely adapted to local needs. This practice is well-documented in an anonymous St. Mark Passion that Bach performed (in several different versions) throughout his career, a work which also saw adapted performances in other places as well.

Since this is a time of the year in which we find ourselves taking note of and expressing our sentiments and feelings for others more deliberately, I found myself considering the unique form of passion that leaders have for their teams and team members. Passion is indeed a tremendously powerful element in any relationship, but the passion that is expressed through a leader's professional actions is something that has both a lasting and influential effect upon those whom the leader serves.

Abstract In his introduction to Tales from Ovid (1997), Ted Hughes places passion at the centre of Ovid’s work: Above all, Ovid was interested in passion. Or rather, in what a passion feels like to the one possessed by it. Not just ordinary passion either, but human passion in extremis—passion where it combusts, or levitates, or mutates into an experience of the supernatural.

Abstract This chapter introduces the concept of passion. In doing so, it presents some of the lay conceptions of passion that have been used through the ages. These include passion as enduring suffering, as intense emotions, as love (and sex), and finally, as love for an activity. The chapter discusses some of the reasons why a scientific study of passion is important, and then moves on to explore some of the justifications for writing a book on passion at this point, including the fact that passion permeates people’s lives, that it can reveal much about people, and that numerous studies have recently been published using the Dualistic Model of Passion as a theoretical backbone. Finally, the chapter briefly introduces the five sections of the book and the thirteen chapters.

Abstract Kierkegaard might be aptly called a philosopher of passion due to his enormous emphasis on this concept. At the same time his notion of passion is highly original and does not correspond to common usage of the term. That is why the paper begins with pointing out the differences between the two. However, the main intention of the paper is to interpret his specific concept of passion as a will to existence on the basis of analyzing the correlative relationship between passion and existence, and as a part of this goal to outline some positive aspects of passion as found in Kierkegaard’s authorship.
