Mainland Southeast Asia has long been recognized as a classic example of a linguistic area, but earlier characterizations of this language area have typically been intuitive, for instance providing seemingly impressive lists of features known to be shared by Mainland Southeast Asian languages but without considering a list of features on which these languages differ, without explicitly considering the extent to which the features in question are common or rare across the world as a whole. By using the maps in the World Atlas of Language Structures , it is possible to build up a more structured assessment of the extent to which Mainland Southeast Asia constitutes a linguistic area. Many maps show a clear delimitation between Mainland Southeast Asia and the rest of Eurasia, although the precise boundary varies from map to map, as does the presence and location of intermediate zones. The dividing line between Mainland Southeast Asia and Insular Southeast Asia is much less clear-cut, thus providing some evidence for a more general Southeast Asian linguistic area.

There are many ways to compile a Flora. The Flora of Turkey is a remarkable 10-volume work completed within a quarter-century of its inception. A review of the factors contributing to the Flora's success is provided. The Flora of Turkey is a classical Flora with an additional supplement recently produced by Turkish botanists. Flora Hellenica is another example of a classical Flora. Some aspects of its background and production are briefly mentioned. Conservationists consider the endemic flora of a country needs protection for all time, and an opportunity arose to prepare a three-volume work on the endemic flora of Greece. The first volume, covering the Peloponnese, was published in September 2001. Flora contributions and monographic work both have their uses. An unconventional model of Flora-writing is presented after the revision of a large family of plants, the Brassicaceae. The latter is a wide and diverse group, several members of which are of great economic importance. Biodiversity in the family is unquestionably demonstrated, together with comments on relationships. In summary, a good Flora survives long after the flora has gone.

Mainland Southeast Asia refers to the countries of Burma, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam. The national language of each is written in its own distinctive script, and with the exception of Thai and Lao, which are closely related, they are mutually unintelligible. In the past these countries have often been at war with one another and, even today, many citizens of the region have grown up with attitudes of indifference, suspicion, or hostility toward the countries which border their own. translations of novels from one Southeast Asian language to another are almost nonexistent; the novel has developed separately in each of the five countries, responding to literary influences from outside the region more than from within.

Land use in a specific region reflects the prevailing socioeconomic circumstances and cultures within that region. To this end, the current study analyzes the landscape structure of Shinan County using landscape indices based on land use to compare various socio-economic factors of the culture found on the islands of Shinan County. In addition, a cluster analysis was conducted to learn about the characteristics of islands exhibiting the same landscape structure. This analysis revealed that the landscape of the second largest island in Shinan County, Jido, was more fragmented than that of the biggest island Aphae. The cluster analysis led to the creation of three groups of islands exhibiting similar landscape structures. Group 1 is composed of the islands which are connected by a mainland bridge (called 'yeonyukgyo' in Korean). Group 2 and 3 also include the upper islands (those islands located in the northern area) and lower islands (those islands located in the southern area) in Shinan County. The presence of more advanced transportation systems and structures occasioned by their proximity to the island of Jido which was connected at an early date to the mainland ensured that the upper islands have historically been more frequently visited.

Hmong(Miao)people's migration from Guizhou to the southeast of Yunnan and the north of the Mainland Southeast Asia had many distinctive characteristics such as short time but large-scale migration that caused by turbulence and sporadic but continuous migration that caused by economic factors. The migration primarily directed into mountains and rarely to plains, valleys and towns. Some quickly settled down after they migrated to these places while others continued to move. The main direction of movement moved towards the southwest but also greatly to the southeast of Yunnan from the north of the Mainland Southeast Asia and some moved back to Guizhou from the southeast of Yunnan and other places, which not only formed distribution pattern mixed with other ethnic groups also formed many small neighborhood of Hmong(Miao)people themselves etc.

This article examines the warp ikat patterned textiles of Mainland Southeast Asia. Although they have received far less attention than the warp ikat patterned textiles of Insular Southeast Asia they represent an extremely important part of the textile heritage of the region. Warp ikat patterned textiles are produced primarily in three areas of Mainland Southeast Asia: by the Thái of northwestern Vietnam and the adjacent area of Laos, by the Cham and some highland Mon-Khmer-speaking peoples in southern Vietnam and Laos, and by groups of Karen, Lawa, and Northern Tai (Khon Muang) in Burma and northern Thailand. After a brief survey of each of these warp ikat traditions, the article explores probable linkages between the three traditions. Finally, the article relates these data to the broader issue of the origin and spread of warp ikat weaving in Southeast Asia.
