    Abstract:
Potholes are the major cause of road accidents. Potholes can cause different type of damages to the vehicles such as flat tire, damage to the wheel and can also cause impact on the body and interior of the vehicle which can cause major injuries to the person. Therefore, proper detection of the potholes is very important task and also proper planning should be done in order to improve the roads condition and for the repairing of the potholes by the road management system. Several plans have been made for the development of a technique which can automatically detect the pothole. In this paper, we will discuss about some of the technology which have been used for the detection of pothole and will propose a pothole detecting technique which can accurately detect and recognize the pothole.

This paper aims at proposing a versatile Pothole Detection System which assists the driver in avoiding potholes on the roads, by giving prior warnings. The basic idea of this system is to detect the pothole at a distance from which driver is driving the vehicle, to alert the driver if pothole is arriving in the way to reduce the speed of the vehicle or take another path. This paper presents a detailed description of the system based on image processing developed to process and analyze the dataset captured using the camera mounted on the car that gives high efficiency and accuracy compared to the conventional methods of pothole detection.

Accurately detecting potholes is an important task in determining the proper strategies for pavement maintenance and rehabilitation. However, manually detecting and evaluating methods are expensive and time-consuming. A pothole detection method is proposed in this study; the method uses various features in two-dimensional (2-D) images that improve the existing method and can accurately detect a pothole. The proposed method can be divided into three steps: ( a) segmentation, ( b) candidate region extraction, and ( c) decision. First, a histogram and the closing operation of a morphology filter are used; the process extracts dark regions for pothole detection. Next, candidate regions of a pothole are extracted with the use of features such as size and compactness. Finally, a decision is made on whether candidate regions are potholes with a comparison of pothole and background features. The 2-D asphalt images with a pothole and without a pothole extracted from a pothole database collected by a survey vehicle on national highways in South Korea were used to compare the performance of the proposed method with that of the existing method. Experimental results show that the proposed pothole detection method has better results than the existing method and that it performs well in distinguishing between a pothole and similar patterns.

The presence of potholes in roadways can lead to dangerous consequences for road users, so detecting and filling potholes is an important task. There are multiple existing automated pothole detection methods, but a lack of methods to classify the potholes based on their severity. We create a publicly available model which takes as input a colored disparity map of a pothole and classifies it into a severity 1–5, with 1 being the lowest and 5 being the highest, based on human annotation of pothole severity judging features such as depth and size. The model had a test accuracy of 64%. This research paves the way for applications to prioritize pothole repairs by severity level or obstacle avoidance in intelligent vehicles.

Abstract The issue of potholes and bad road quality is faced by nearly every developing country. These conditions often lead to accidents and traffic and cause the general public inconvenience. Significant research work has been performed in the field of effective pothole and road quality detection but due to several underlying issues like relying on only computer vision or sensor-based modeling, or requiring specialized equipment like LiDAR, implementing these solutions in the real world has never been feasible, especially for developing countries where a reliable system is required which works under any condition and more importantly, can be implemented with minimal resources and changes to the existing infrastructure. The proposed system is an end-to-end robust architecture that utilizes mobile devices mounted on government vehicles for data collection and features an innovative ensemble of a YOLOS and a YOLOv8 model resulting in a 97.34% mAP@0.50 score for pothole detection, in conjunction with state-of-the-art sensor based pothole detection and road quality detection models resulting in impressive accuracies of 98.5% and 95.4% respectively. This two-forked approach to pothole and road quality detection combined with innovative connected applications like an analytics dashboard for the government and a navigation application for the consumer make this entire system highly relevant while being scalable, reliable, and easily deployable using the existing infrastructure in developing countries.

Potholes are one type of pavement surface distresses whose assessment is essential for developing road network maintenance strategies. Existing methods for automatic pothole detection either rely on expensive and high‐maintenance equipment or could not segment the pothole accurately. In this paper, an asphalt pavement pothole detection and segmentation method based on energy field is put forward. The proposed method mainly includes two processes. Firstly, the wavelet energy field of the pavement image is constructed to detect the pothole by morphological processing and geometric criterions. Secondly, the detected pothole is segmented by Markov random field model and the pothole edge is extracted accurately. This methodology has been implemented in a MATLAB prototype, trained, and tested on 120 pavement images. The results show that it can effectively distinguish potholes from cracks, patches, greasy dirt, shadows, and manhole covers and accurately segment the pothole. For pothole detection, the method reaches an overall accuracy of 86.7%, with 83.3% precision and 87.5% recall. For pothole segmentation, the overlap degree between the extracted pothole region and the original pothole region is mostly more than 85%, which accounts for 88.6% of the total detected pavement pothole images.
