Abstract:
A band-switchable and tunable terahertz (THz) metamaterial based on a vanadium dioxide (VO2) thin film was proposed in the THz frequency regime. The VO2 thin film with a high conductivity change rate and smooth phase transition characteristics was deposited. To obtain band switching characteristics and reduce THz wave loss, the VO2 thin film was etched in the form of a line. Two rectangular C-shaped resonators were configured to face each other, with an etched VO2 thin film line in between. When the VO2 thin film was in the insulator phase, the two resonators individually resonated, and when the VO2 thin film was in the metal phase, they were connected and resonated as one, showing band switching characteristics. According to the state of the VO2 thin film, the fabricated metamaterial resonated at 1.29 THz when the two resonators were electrically separated and resonated at 0.65 THz when the two resonators were electrically connected. In the band-switching process, the THz wave transmission characteristics were continuously tunable. The measurement results of the proposed structure clearly showed that the rectangular C-shaped metamaterial based on the etched VO2 thin film is capable of band switching and continuous transmission control. In the near future, band-switchable and tunable THz metamaterials based on etched VO2 thin films can be employed as key devices in THz wave 6G wireless communication technology. Keywords:

We investigate the transmission properties of planar metamaterials based on complementary double-ring resonators, and a left-handed resonant transmission peak has been verified by both simulation and experimental results. The theoretical analysis and numerical simulation on the electromagnetic fields inside the metamaterial are provided to explain the physical origin of both electric and magnetic resonances. In addition, the backward wave propagation from the phase changes in the moving picture of electric field distribution is shown to confirm the left-handed behavior of the transmission line.

Metamaterials are designed to have structures that make available properties not found in Nature. Their unique properties (such as negative index of refraction, n) can be extended from GHz all the way to optical frequencies. We review the scaling properties of metamaterials that have been fabricated and give negative n and negative permeability, μ. It is found that most of the experimentally realized metamaterials have λ/a between 2 (THz and optical region) and 12 (GHz region), where λ is the operation wavelength and a is the size of the unit cell. The transmission losses for the experimental structures and the ratio λ/a for the simulated structures are presented. Finally, a comparison of the different metamaterial designs (fishnet, cut and/or continuous wires, and split-ring resonators and wires) is given.

Metamaterials are engineered materials which offer superb electromagnetic performance over naturally occurring materials, and offer great potential to construct novel devices operating in the terahertz frequency regime. Here we experimentally demonstrate metamaterial narrow band filters, perfect absorbing elements for THz imaging, and ultra-fast THz switches. Experiments are supplanted with simulation and theory, thus verifying high performance.

The planar metamaterials comprising complementary double-ring resonators (CDRRs) show its left handed behaviour. As a consequent work, this paper presents a detailed parametric study on the magnetically resonant transmission characteristics of the complementary double-ring metamaterials based on its structural parameters. This will be useful for the design of compact planar metamaterials based on the transmission lines loaded with CDRRs.

Electromagnetic metamaterials (MMs) consisting of highly conducting sub-wavelength metallic resonators enable many unusual electromagnetic properties at user defined frequencies which are not permissible with the naturally occurring materials [1, 2]. Generally the electromagnetic properties of metamaterials are controlled by the design variation of the MM unit cell, often termed as meta-molecule, consisting of single or multiple metallic split ring resonators (SRRs). These metallic resonators are quite often termed as meta-atoms too. The near field electromagnetic coupling between these meta-atoms exhibits an important role in modulating the fundamental resonances of the metamaterials [3-5].

Abstract As new designs of metamaterials rapidly emerge, methods of characterizing their fundamental electromagnetic properties become increasingly important. Here, we utilize the parallel plate waveguide associated with terahertz time-domain spectroscopy experiments to analyze the coupling of terahertz radiation to ultrathin electric split-ring resonators located halfway between the waveguide plates. Our observations determine that the magnetic response dominates across the frequency range of the system. The experimental results are confirmed by simulations, emphasizing the usefulness of the proposed approach for further investigations of magnetic coupling in metamaterials in the terahertz regime.

We show that disorder can modify dramatically the effective magnetic response of a composite metamaterial including its specific property of negative refraction. We demonstrate that a relatively weak disorder in the parameters of the split-ring resonators can reduce and even completely eliminate the finite frequency range where the metamaterial possesses the left-handed properties. This effect is expected to be crucially important for a design of metamaterials operating in the terahertz or visible region of the frequency spectrum.

Engineering resonances in metamaterials has been so far the main way of reaching simultaneously negative permittivity and negative permeability leading to negative index materials. In this paper, we present an experimental and numerical analysis of the infrared response of metamaterials made of continuous nanowires and split ring resonators (SRR) deposited on low-doped silicon when the geometry of the SRRs is gradually altered. The impact of the geometric transformation of the SRRs on the spectra of the composite metamaterial is measured in the 20-200 THz frequency range (i.e., in the 1.5-15 microm wavelength range) for the two field polarizations under normal to plane propagation. We show experimentally and numerically that tuning the SRRs towards elementary cut wires translates in a predictable manner the frequency response of the artificial material. We also analyze coupling effects between the SRRs and the continuous nanowires for different spacings between them. The results of our study are expected to provide useful guidelines for the design of negative index metamaterials on silicon.
