A semi-industrial pilot test to thicken iron ore tailings is carried out with classified thickening equipments of hydrocyclone and thickener. The results indicates that the concentration of tailings increases from 19.62%to 54.32%by classified thickening system consisting ofφ125 mm hydrocyclone andφ2000 mm paste thickener, which meets the technological requirements of efficient thickening of total tailings and lays a foundation for tailings backfilling into the gobs.

Tailings dewatering is an important part of the tailings disposal. Sludge dehydrant is a kind of important auxiliary agent in improving the tailings dehydration dehydrated efficiency in tailings enrichment dehydration. The paper reviews that the preparation and application of special flocculant of specialized flocculants for tailings water treatment. And it points out the development tendency of the specialized flocculants for tailings water treatment. Cationic polyacrylamide as one of dewatering agents is a suitable mean to solve tailings dewatering problem.

In mineral processing industry, most of the separation processes involve substantial quantities of water. The final concentrate generated has to be with low moisture content and recovery of water from the tailing stream has to be recycled. So dewatering i.e., separation of liquid from solid is an important step in mineral processing. As dewatering processes are expensive and inefficient in general, these need focused attention. In case of fine and ultra-fine particles, (fine <100µm, ultra-fine < 5 µm) screening, even if in wet condition, is not effective. As there are many limitations associated with thickeners and filtration units, hydrocyclone can be thought of as an alternative in the solid-liquid separation process. Because of the design and operational simplicity, high capacity, low maintenance and operating cost, hydrocyclone is found to be very attractive for dewatering purpose. So, if hydrocyclones can be used efficiently at this stage, then the load on filtration units or thickeners can be reduced.
This paper is aimed at understanding the most important factors that are affecting the separation of solid and liquid in a hydrocyclone for dewatering application i.e., recovering maximum solid and minimum water in the underflow which means maximum water recovery in the overflow. In this study the effect of three parameters on dewatering efficiency was studied in a 2″ hydrocyclone keeping at maximum pressure to achieve the objective. From the experimental results on silica sand, it was found that maximum 98.6 % solid can be recovered with 42.6 % water in the underflow.

An alternative process to obtain a high degree of dewatering tailings that produces a high-density product is presented in this article. This technology involves the combination of tailings particle grain size classification by hydrocyclones (HC) and tailings dewatering by horizontal vibratory screens (HVS). It makes it possible to dewater tailings to a high grade of performance. This alternative technology (HC-HVS) involves the recovery of water from the coarse fraction of tailings (sands) through two hydrocycloning stages, followed by a dewatering stage of cycloned tailings sands on horizontal vibratory screens, to reduce moisture content and turn it into a “cake”. The resulting coarse fraction tailings are easily transported to a dry stack tailings storage facility (TSF). The fine fraction of tailings (slimes) can be dewatered on thickener equipment to recover part of the process water. Finally, this article describes the main benefits of this alternative dewatered tailings technology with an emphasis on (i) dewatering technology evolution over the last 17 years; (ii) process stages features; (iii) pilot test results; (iv) tailings properties analysis (such as particle grain size distribution, fines content) and (v) lessons learned about the experience gained in the operation of Mantos Blancos case study with dry stack tailings storage facility.

ABSTRACT Vegetable wastes in the food industry are costly lo handle because of their high moisture content. while mill plant tailings in the mining industry contain large quantities of ultralines which are difficult io dewater. This paper describes the results of small scale electmosmotic dewatering (EOD) and combined field dewatering (CFD) measurements with model vegetable sludges and mine tailings.

This report describes Bureau of Mines laboratory test results in electrokinetic dewatering and consolidation of metal-mine mill tailings from five mines in the Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, district. Classified (coarse) tailings, slimes, and unclassified material were separately tested. Tailings were placed in 0.3 ft/sup 3/ plexiglass models, and dc potential was applied until dewatering ceased. Time-oriented measurements of water removal, changes in resistivity, and power consumption were recorded during the dewatering process. Moisture content and density of the dewatered material at test end indicated the method to be generally effective for all materials examined, but best results were achieved with well-mixed unclassified tailings.
