How consumers trade off supply security and green electricity: Evidence from Germany and Great Britain

This study examined electricity consumption in a Nigeria township with a view of understanding the challenges faced by electricity consumers and to proffer practicable suggestions for sustainable electricity supply. Major findings emanating from the study show that 26.7 % of respondents acknowledged the electricity supply through the electricity service provider (ESP). Again, 71 % of respondents relied on electricity through the alternative’s sources complementing ESP services. Furthermore, 75 % of respondents confirmed a temporal supply of 5 hours daily representing 20 % daily electricity supply. In another dimension, in terms of billing, 62.4 % received estimated electricity bills as many homes are without electricity meters. Finally, this study revealed some planning and policy implications and provided recommendations through which electricity consumption in the state could be improved upon.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the consumers’ adoption of renewable energy in Poland. The study focused on finding out the factors that influence the adoption of the technology, considering its importance in conserving the environment. The study was conducted using a quantitative method, with primary data collected from 467 households using renewable energy technology in Poland. The research adopted the TAM model. The independent variables of the study included renewable energy initial cost, environmental concern, risk and trust for renewable energy, ease of use, financial incentives, and relative advantage. The dependent variable was renewable energy adoption. Structural equation modelling (SEM) was used to analyze the study hypotheses. The research found out that environmental concerns, ease of use, financial incentives, and relative advantage have a positive and significant influence on adoption of renewable energy technology in Poland. However, renewable energy initial cost and risk, and trust for renewable energy did not significantly influence renewable energy adoption. The study recommended that the stakeholders should consider the aspects of environmental concern as a key role player in pushing for adoption of renewable energy. The government, non-governmental organizations, and concerned stakeholders should consider giving incentives towards renewable energy adoption. Creating awareness regarding the benefits and strengths of renewable energy should be prioritized to the households.

Countries and big power companies are using renewable energy sources to promote development, expand electricity access, and meet their policy targets for reliable, secure, sustainable and affordable energy. It is very difficult to specify which renewable energy technology is the most appropriate without having access to reliable information on the relative benefits of these energy sources. In Pakistan, data for household electricity consumption are available in the form of monthly electricity bills only, and, therefore, are not helpful in establishing appliance-wise consumption. Further, it does not help in establishing the relationship among the household electricity consumption and various driving factors. This study aimed to unlock the household electricity consumption in Pakistan by analyzing electricity bills and investigating the impact of various socioeconomic, demographic, and dwelling parameters and usage of different appliances. The methodology adopted in this study was survey-based data collection of the residential sector. For this purpose, data were collected from 523 dwellings through surveys and interviews in Mirpur city. The results of the data analysis revealed that the average household electricity consumption is 2469 kWh/year with an average family size of seven and an average floor area of 78.91 m2. Based on possession of various appliances, the households were categorized into four types and their consumption patterns were established and compared. Air Conditioned (AC) houses consume 44% more electricity compared to the non-AC houses, whereas an Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) consumes electricity equivalent to an AC. The research findings are useful for policy makers and building designers and are discussed in the conclusion section.

Germany has an experience of renewable energy policies that encourages their usage, achieving technological migration and the redesign of its power generation matrix, achieving 112 GW of renewable resources at 2017. The importance of renewable energy is increasing both with the inadequacy of traditional energy resources and environmental awareness. Turkey has a large potential for renewable energy sources, and utilizing the potential is an inevitable choice for increasing its self-sufficiency with an environmentally friendly way. Therefore, evaluation of renewable energy alternatives for the country and determination of the most suitable renewable energy alternative are important issues to make reasonable energy investment plan. In this study, we evaluate the renewable energy alternatives of Turkey using Modified Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process. Renewable energy alternatives considered in the study are hydro, wind, solar, biomass and geothermal energy. Four main criteria and eight sub criteria are used to evaluate five renewable energy alternatives. The obtained results indicate that solar energy is the best alternative, and wind energy is the second best alternative for Turkey.
