The modern world is not thinking without information technology. Training specialists not only fluent in IT technologies, but also those who know how to manage people and resources, is one of the main tasks of the IT university. This article focuses on teaching project management for IT students. The course covers the necessary set of knowledge and skills required for IT project managers. The main goal of the course is to teach students to focus on the organizational and managerial aspects of program projects. Along with various methods of project management (planning, budgeting and risk analysis), the main project management tools are considered; leadership principles; customer relations; liability issues; intellectual property issues; privacy issues. The article discusses the modern approach to teaching as a blended learning technology. This approach, combining traditional forms of education with elements of e-learning, is well applicable for a project management course. The features of the teaching of this course presented in the article are based on the personal responsibility of students for their own learning results. This also includes training based on mastery, an environment of high achievements, learning by doing. Actual methods in education as learning by doing, inverted learning and gamification are considered. The work also highlighted the role of “Project Management” in the student’s general educational trajectory. In addition, the article presents the experience of implementing and teaching this course at the International University of Information Technologies. The Project Management course is one of 12 courses in the Software Development Program (SDP) cycle, presented by iCarnegie.

Education in the Department of the Built Environment (Eindhoven University of Technology) aims to prepare students for multidisciplinary design teams. The Bachelor program offers a broad range incorporating essentials of urbanism, architecture, structure, building physics, real estate, construction, services et cetera. This broad BSc program lays a foundation for students and is followed by a Master program that focuses on specialization. There are six specializations: Architecture, Urban Design & Planning, Structural Design, Building Physics & Services, Real Estate Management & Development and Construction Management & Engineering. Multidisciplinary in the BSc is more than offering a variety of knowledge in courses and lectures. The Department also puts a lot of effort to train students to gain experiences in integral design teams. This takes shape in studios but is best expressed in the Multi-project (a semester assignment in the last year of the Bachelor). This assignment is organized by 9 coaches (from all specializations in the Master). The assessment is always a practice-based issue, and students have to cooperate as a design team during one semester. Developing the Multi-project has been a long route that took place over many years with several adjustments according to experiences and information gathered by student inquiries. This paper gives a very global overview of the present setup to contextualize this assignment. After that, the main part of this paper focuses on the kickoff (first 2-3 weeks). Here students start in parallel studios, meant to put them on track for integral design. Each studio combines two disciplines and compels students to precede design by analyzing all kind of issues in the light of the specific assignment. Because of the complexity of this assignment we frequently ask students to fill in an enquiry. Because of this we are now able to draw conclusions from major changes during the last 10-14 assignments (2007 – 2013).

Background: Project management is often perceived as boring and tedious by undergraduate engineering students as the traditional ways of teaching the subject often lack context and relevance to practice. Nevertheless, soft skills such as project management, leadership and communication are very important graduate attributes which are often a core part of the duties performed by graduate engineers. Non-traditional teaching pedagogies such as project and problem based learning are found effective in developing such competencies.
Purpose: This paper discusses an innovative approach to enhance student engagement in an engineering project management subject by using mixed-mode teaching which includes face to face lectures and active student-centred project-based learning through an authentic industry project. The main objectives of embedding an industry-based project in the subject are to give students an exposure to real world challenges and opportunities to implement the project management skills and tools they learnt in the classroom in a real-life scenario. Having a real industry project also helps to add context and authenticity, which in turn helps to keep students engaged and motivated.
Design/method: As a part of the project management subject, an industry project based on an actual ongoing project was embedded in EG3000 (Engineering Project Management) at James Cook University. The class was divided into groups of 9-10 students, each group consisting of students from different engineering disciplines. Each group of students represented a project management team to manage and execute the project. As a part of this project, student teams were required to conduct planning and feasibility analysis and define project scope, liaise with key stakeholders to identify their needs and to report status of the project; conduct risk analysis; consider sustainability aspects during the project delivery; and apply appropriate project management tools and concepts for performance evaluation, budgeting, auditing and successful delivery of the project.
Results: Mixed-mode teaching which included face to face lectures plus project-based learning through an authentic industry project significantly improved student engagement in the undergraduate third year engineering project management subject. Involvement of industry in delivering the project briefing and a site visit added authenticity and context to the project.
Conclusions: Instead of the traditional chalk and talk pedagogy, a mixed-mode of delivery was successfully trialled in the undergraduate project management subject using a combination of in-class lectures and student-centred project-based learning. An authentic large scale industry project used in the subject gave students invaluable opportunities to apply project management knowledge and skills in a realworld scenario and to appreciate the challenges they will face as graduate engineers.

Teaching students project managements requires a hands-on approach. Incorporating project management concepts and processes into a student team Web development project adds a dimension that exposes students to the realities of effective e-business applications. This paper describes the project management approach used in an e-business applications course in which students build complete Web sites. Based upon the written evaluations included with the final project documentation, students feel this project is the most valuable learning experience of the course. Furthermore, a positive relationship is established between the actual Web development and effective project management processes. It is important for students to understand the triple constraints (scope, time, and cost) that must be balanced in business projects.

This paper describes an enrollment problem and the solution for the introductory course developed by the faculty members in the Management Information Systems Department at Ohio University's College of Business. The solution is a method of introducing information systems (IS) to students that often leaves them wanting to return to the subject area again in the form of a major or minor. The method is presented as a framework which readers can adopt within their own departments. This framework demonstrates how to introduce information systems as an interesting and fun area of study, provide lasting value, and teach students to teach themselves. The method builds upon existing literature in the areas of information systems, management education, education in higher education, communications, marketing, and psychology.
