In this paper, a conceptual data model, called the UDM(Unified Data Model), to efficiently represent database structures related with object technology and complex structured data, is proposed. This model integrates major features of modern data models, such as E-R model, Semantic Object Model, and UML, especially from the viewpoint of database design. This model is basically a simplified, but extended version of the Object-Relationship Model, which was proposed to model complex structures of temporal-spatial multimedia data. This model incorporates some of the important semantic and structural information of modern database applications and it is designed to support all of the major logical database models, including relational, object-relational, object-oriented, and (semi-)structured databases. A special diagrammatic technique, called the UDD(Unified Data Diagram), is introduced as a tool for database design. Also, possible ways to derive logical views of data from this unified data model are presented. The proposed model can be utilized as a convenient and practical tool for conceptual database designs.

Based on the study of data integration in the unified information platform of heterogeneous e-government system and the investigation of the design of e-government, the technology of topic maps and the relational database, a new data integrated model was issued. According to the analyze of relational database, this model realizes the data integration of the heterogeneous e-government system which generate a cross system subject index layer between the application layer and the data layer in several heterogeneous e-government system and use the technology of OAI-based metadata harvesting as well as the auto-generation and auto-combination of topic map.

Railway distributed system integration needs to realize information exchange, resources sharing and coordination process across fields, departments and application systems. And railway data integration is essential to implement this integration. In order to resolve the problem of heterogeneity of data models among data sources of different railway operation systems, this paper presents a novel integration data model of spatial structure, a XML-oriented 3-dimension common data model. The proposed model accommodates both the flexibility of level relationship and syntax expression in data integration. In this model, a spatial data pattern is used to describe and express the characteristic relationship of data items among all types of data. Based on the data model with rooted directed graph and the organization of level as well as the flexibility of the expression, the model can represent the mapping between different data models, including relationship model and object-oriented model. A consistent concept and algebraic description of the data set is given to function as the metadata in data integration, so that the algebraic manipulation of data integration is standardized to support the data integration of distributed system.

By referencing the subject data storage idea in the areas of data warehouse and service-oriented analysis method, we proposed a two-stage method to create SOA-based data model including: (i) building a subject domain E-R data entities model, and (ii) building service data model. We described the data model from the layered point of view, where three layers are physical data layer, data aggregation layer and cross-organization services aggregation layer. In the development of the Distance Open Education Information System, we used this method to analyze and establish the system data model.

In e-commerce the multidimensional data analysis based on the Web data needs integrating various data sources such as XML data and relational data on the conceptual level. A conceptual data description approach to multidimensional data model — the UML galaxy diagram is presented in order to conduct multidimensional data analysis for multiple subjects. The approach is illuminated using a case of 2_roots UML galaxy diagram that takes marketing analysis of TV products involved one retailer and several suppliers into consideration.

Canonical data modeling (CDM) is a method for reducing the total cost of integrating information systems. CDM enhances model-driven development (MDD) by making explicit situations in which data components are being reused (i.e., shared across systems). In this paper, we present cost models for data modeling and data integration, with and without CDM. We then demonstrate how to use those cost models (during project planning) to determine if CDM is a good fit for an enterprise. Next, we provide the first empirical estimates of the costs associated with data component creation, reuse, and integration in an MDD environment. We conclude with technical lessons learned performing CDM for our government clients.
