The celestite ore mainly consists of strontium sulfate, barium sulfate and calcium sulfate. The strontium, barium and calcium are difficult to separate from each other, because all of them belong to alkaline earth metallic elements and their characteristics are quite alike.Three determining methods of strontium, barium and calcium content in celestite were compared in this paper. The results showed that volumetric method has high recovery,X-ray Fluorescence Spectrometry has high precision, and inductuvely coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry(ICP-AES) has great advantages in determining trace elements.

The low-temperature limit of the effective Grüneisen parameter of calcium, strontium and barium fluorides has been calculated on Axe's shell model and compared with the values derived from thermal expansion by Bailey and Yates.

Abstract : The infrared spectra of sulfates and carbonates in the solid state are discussed. Methods are proposed for the determination of single sulfates (barium, strontium, sodium, and potassium sulfates) by the pellet technique. The peaks recommended for barium and strontium sulfates are 983/cm and 993/cm, respectively. Sodium and potassium sulfates are both measured at 619/cm. A procedure is proposed for the determination of barium and strontium sulfates in the presence of each other by measurements at 983/cm and 993/cm, respectively. Methods are proposed for the determination of single carbonates (barium, strontium, and calcium carbonates) by the pellet technique. Measurements for the barium, strontium, and calcium carbonates are made at 693/cm, 704/cm, and 712/cm, respectively. The procedure cannot be used for the determination of sodium or potassium carbonates because of the hygroscopicity of these compounds. A procedure is described for the determination of barium, strontium, and calcium carbonates in the presence of each other by measuring the peak heights at 693/cm, 704/cm (or 698/cm), and 712/cm, respectively. The methods for the determination of barium and strontium sulfates in the presence of each other, and barium, strontium, and calcium carbonates in the presence of each other can be used down a concentration of 5% for the minor constituent. For lower percentages the errors are rather large.

The colour reactions of barium (Ⅱ) and strontium (Ⅱ) with dibromomethyl carboxyazo were studied comparatively. In the medium of H3 PO4, the colour reaction of barium (Ⅱ) is highly selectivity and tolerates the existence of 6 - fold of strontium(Ⅱ). And in the buffer medium of H3BO3 - Na2B4O7,the absorbances of colour coordination compounds for barium(Ⅱ) and strontium(Ⅱ) have an additivity over a certain range of concentrtion. On these grounds, a new method of the successive determination for barium and strontium had been developed.

It is possible to accurately determine barium and strontium in a variety of geologic samples by the XRF method proposed herein after correcting for matrix effects. The first-order (I) titanium Kα1 line interferes spectrally with the barium first-order (I) Lα1 analytical line. Iron significantly absorbs the emitted strontium x-ray quanta. Both of these effects were investigated in detail and a method of correcting for them developed. Detection limit for both elements is about 10 ppm.

The metal cores of symmetrical sandwiches of alkaline-earth oxides have been found in the majority of cases to have a positive potential with respect to probes embedded in the oxide. These potential differences were much smaller in barium oxide than in either strontium oxide or in mixed (barium and strontium) oxides. They are attributed to local concentrations of positive ions (chiefly of strontium) which were produced near the metal cores owing to prolonged high temperature treatment during the pyrolysis of the carbonate.
