Three wearer trials of mens socks are described. The trials tested the efficacy of the shrinkproofing treatments and the effect of blend ratio upon wear life. The 80/20 wool/nylon socks had about three times the wear life of similar pure wool socks. No socks failed through shrinkage. The wear life was unaffected by the type of shrinkproofing treatment. The socks which lost least fiber during wear and which retained the best appearance were those which had been treated with resin after manufacture. Irrespective of blends socks appear to be in moisture equilibrium with RH between 65 and 85%.

It is investigated how the fiber material of socks influences the wearing comfort of casual socks. The wearing comfort of socks, whose fiber materials were changed, and yarn count, size and weave of socks were the same, was evaluated by the tactual sensation of consumers using the paired comparison and the SD methods. As the result of the sensory test, the fiber material of socks influenced the wearing comfort. The adjectives used for the sensory evaluation of wearing comfort were examined by the factor analysis. From the result of the factor analysis, the wearing comfort of socks by the tactual sensation was evaluated by two common factors "good feel" and "warm". The subjects evaluated the adjectives "warm", "heavy", "easy to wear", "thick", "stretch" and "expand" when putting on the socks and "soft" while putting on them for ten minutes from the transmitted information quantity calculated by the information theory.

OBJECTIVES The risk of falls increases due to decrease in balance ability in elderly. A safe environment that can prevent slipping in daily life is required to prevent falls. The purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of socks with non-slip pads on improving foot stability and balance in the elderly.METHODS Sixteen older women aged 67-87years complete tests while wearing non-slip socks and/or normal socks. Measurements were taken for body composition, static and agility/dynamic balance, and self-reported wearing sensation.RESULTS Agility/dynamic balance was higher in the non-slip socks group than that in the normal socks group (p<0.05). The static balances did not differ significantly between the two groups (p>0.05). There were no differences between the two groups in terms of comfort, thermal, wet, tactile, and fit sensations according to the wearing of the socks (p>0.05). Significant higher stability sensation was observed in non-slip socks group than normal socks group (p<0.05).CONCLUSIONS These results suggested that the use of non-slip socks will help to prevent falls that may occur during indoor or outdoor activities and also improve exercise performance in the elderly.

Mechanical testers have commonly been used to measure the frictional properties of socks. However, the friction values may be susceptible to the level of stretchiness of tested fabrics or human variability. Thus, the aim of this study was to propose a novel method that enables friction measurement of socks in a sock-wearing condition with less human variability effects. Five socks with different frictional properties were chosen. Three experimental ramp tests were performed with an artificial structure shaped like the foot-ankle complex (last) and a ramp tester to quantify the static coefficient of friction (COF) at the foot against sock, at the sock against an insole, and the foot wearing socks against the insole, respectively. The angle where the last slipped while the ramp surface was gradually inclined was used to compute the static COF values for each sock. The reliability was 0.99, and COF values ranged from 0.271 to 0.861 at the foot-sock interface, 0.342 to 0.639 at the sock-insole interface, and 0.310 to 0.614 in the third test. Socks with different frictional properties were successfully distinguished each other. Thus, the suggested protocol could be a reliable option for measuring the static COF values in the tension similar with it found in a sock-waring condition with reduced effects of human variability.

Toes socks are used widely for the health of feet. However, discomfort is one of the major complains from toes socks users. The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of functional fibers on the physiological response and wearing sensation of toes socks. For experiment, two different toes socks with cotton/warm fiber(WS) and cotton/chitosan fiber(CS) were knitted automatically by a computer controlled flat knitting machine. The control toes socks with cotton/nylon/polyurethan(TS) were prepared to compare the properties. Experiments were conducted in a climate room of $16\pm2^{\circ}C$ , $50\pm5%$ R.H. The results of this study were as follows. The change of heart rate, pulse rate, and mean skin temperature showed no difference among three different socks. However, skin temperature of TS was evaluated higher than that of WS and CS. After exercise wearing WS both instep temperature and sole temperature of women tend to higher compared to men. Wet sensation and overall comfort sensation of toes socks were significantly influenced by different fiber contents. Subjects evaluated WS and CS more comfortable than TS.
