Porous SiC Ceramics with Multiple Pore Structure Fabricated via Gelcasting and Solid State Sintering
Porous SiC ceramics with multiple pore structures were fabricated via gelcasting and solid state sintering.A novel gelling agent of Isobam was applied and PMMA was used as both foam stabilizer and pore forming agent. The mechanical properties of porous SiC ceramics were investigated as functions of PMMA content, rotating speed of ball mill, and sintering temperature. With PMMA content increasing from 5wt% to 20wt%, the foaming effect was inhibited while the stability of bubbles increased. When the rotating speed was 220 r/min, the open porosities of the as-prepared SiC ceramics sintered at 2100 varied ℃ from 51.5% to 72.8%, and compressive strength varied from 7.9 to 48.2 MPa.With the rotating speed increasing from 220 to 280 r/min, the foaming effect was aggravated and the porosities of SiC ceramics sintered at 2100 increased.℃ While the sintering temperature increasing from 2050 to 2150 , ℃ the SiC ceramics prepared with PMMA content of 20wt% at rotating speed of 220 r/min decreased in the open porosities while increased in compressive strength.

R 6 method proposed by U. K. CEGB (Central Electricity Generating Board, present Nuclear Electric plc) was applied to fracture evaluation using a failure assessment diagram (FAD). Since FAD has been developed based on J-integral criterion, J-integral can be inversely estimated using FAD. Because the fatigue crack growth rate is determined by J-integral value, it is suggested that R 6 method can be applied not only to fracture assessment but also to low-cycle fatigue crack growth assessment. Carbon steel pipes with a defect were monotonically and cyclically fractured to confirm the applicability of the crack growth assessment method using FAD. In the monotonic bending tests, J-resistant curve obtained by R6 method agreed with that obtained by η-Factor approach. In the cyclic bending tests, fatigue lives could be successfully estimated by the analysis using R 6 method.

Strain-based failure assessment methods have been usually used in recent years to propose the fitness-for-service flaws. In this paper, the stress-based and strain-based failure assessment diagram (SB-FAD) approaches were reviewed firstly. Then, SB-FAD approach was used to the material commercially pure titanium TA2 with high strain-hardening coefficient. Several failure assessment curves obtained from strain-based method for four typical specimens, i.e., CCP (center-cracked plate), DECP (double edge cracked plate), SECP (single edge cracked plate) and CT (compact tension) were proposed. It was found that the geometries and crack sizes had obvious effects on the failure assessment curves. By comparing with the stress-based failure assessment curves, the traditional strain-based failure assessment curves could lead to more conservatism in the stage after yielding. However, the SB-FAD modified by Ainsworth can be used.
