Abstract:
This paper aims to establish PE teachers' views and understanding of physical activity promotion. The paper presents selected findings from a larger scale research project which investigated physical activity promotion within a whole school context. Questionnaires were completed by 42 secondary school PE Heads of Department (PEHoDs) and follow‐up interviews were conducted with a smaller sample (n=9). PEHoDs were generally found to have positive views towards physical activity promotion in schools and most spoke of promoting it through their curricular and extra‐curricular PE programmes. Despite this, a number demonstrated a rather limited understanding of physical activity promotion and how it could be approached in their school. It was concluded that, if PE teachers are to have a real impact on young people's physical activity behaviour, they need to be encouraged and supported to adopt a broader view and understanding of physical activity promotion and of their role within it.Keywords:

By reviewing the development of physical education ideology in the United States, the author analyzed modern US scholars' understanding of physical education, further identified the similarities and differences between such two physical education views as ”education through the physical” and ”education of the physical”, and drew the following conclusions: the main difference between such two physical education views as ”education through the physical” and ”education of the physical” rests with physical education goals instead of physical education means; the ”education through the physical” has various goals, which is in conformity with goal uniqueness, and in practice it shows as the teaching of sports techniques, while it 1s unknown whether or not its goals are realized; the ”education of the physical” has only one specific goal, namely, to perfect the human body, and in practice it shows as the teaching of fitness knowledge and skills.

The structure of the scientific research result is an organic system that includes both the basic research results expressed in works and essays and the applicable results, such as patents and technology confidentialality. But only the works and essays have been regarded as the essential conditions for profession promotion, whereas the applicable results have been neglected in our country for a long time, which is inappropriate in the era of knowledge-based economy. This essay has analyzed the positive and negative effects of the present conditions of the profession promotion and proposed some reasonable strategies and suggestions.

This paper reports the findings of a case-study that examined the different beliefs about the nature and purpose of physical education of beginning and graduating physical education teacher education students. Four themes emerged from the findings: 'physical education as sport versus physical education as more than sport'; 'the perceived importance of the biophysical sciences'; 'health and physical education - a field of multiple discourses'; and 'from a position of uncertainty to one of complexity'. The beginning PETE students saw physical education as being synonymous with sport, whereas the graduating PETE students described physical education as being more than sport. While the beginning students' beliefs about the nature and purpose of physical education were naturally limited, the graduates conveyed a much deeper understanding of the complexity involved in both defining the field and describing the nature of the physical education teacher's role.
