Abstract:
Abstract In this study, the authors used a national, Web-based survey to examine female and male siblings of individuals with disabilities. More than 1,160 adult siblings completed a 163-question survey about themselves, their siblings, and their sibling relationships. Most respondents reported fairly close contact with their siblings and positive sibling relationships, good health, and benefits from being a sibling to a brother–sister with disabilities. Compared with men, women reported benefiting more from the sibling relationship. Relative to the U.S. population, female (though not male) siblings married later and divorced less often, and these women had their first child at later ages. Implications are discussed regarding future research and service needs. Keywords:

This chapter presents a Palestinian folktale focusing on relationships among siblings. Here, the brother and sister are put into situations that serve to increase their affection. Following the death of their mother, they become progressively more isolated and come to rely on each other more and more; indeed, their very survival depends on their mutual love and cooperation. To demonstrate the importance of this connection, the tale juxtaposes two relationships: sister/brother and wife/husband. Although the brother cannot be as a husband to his sister, equally important, a husband can never be as a brother to his wife. It is therefore as essential that the sister have her brother by her side as that she have a husband.

A sister and brother pair with immense mathematical reasoning ability is rare. This case study traces the early education of an exceptionally intellectually talented sister and brother who were identified by the Study of Mathematically Precocious Youth (SMPY) at the Johns Hopkins University. According to Dr. Julian Stanley, R and M are one of only two such pairs SMPY has identified. In addition, the experiences of the parents with education, both their own and their children's are examined. This account is based on interviews with each member of the Z family. In addition, the assistance of Professor Julian Stanley at The Johns Hopkins University is gratefully acknowledged.

The wretched poet Keats was all along cherishing a kind heart of a poet towards his two brothers and a sister, helping generously with money his first younger brother George who was far away in America, keeping watch for months by the bedside of his second younger brother Tom till the patients departing from life calmly, showing his deep sympathy and dear love for his youngest sister Fanny who had long been caged in the house of her guardian Abbey, and composing for the world an ever lasting and mind agitated song full of brotherly affection and of friendship between a brother and a sister.

The relationship between sibling pair type (i.e., sister-sister, sister-brother, brother-brother, brother-sister) and performance of sibling functions (i.e., services that siblings perform for each other) was investigated using a sample of 224 college students. Also examined was the relationship between perceived sibling functions and perceptions of closeness. As hypothesized, sister pairs were more likely to report performing certain sibling functions than were other sibling pair types. The expectation that sibling functions and sibling closeness would be related was partially supported, particularly for women responding about either a sister or a brother.

This research is based on two cases study of brother and sister who experienced difficulties due to their parent's abuse. The brother and sister play therapy was conducted for sixteen sessions. Each of the therapy and the activity sessions ran 90 minutes weekly. The purpose of this study is to decrease problematic behaviors and to improve self-confidence of abused brother and sister. As a result, the brother's and sister's self-confidence lowered by past negative experiences has been improved, poor social relationship patterns have changed and need for growth as a good person has arisen. The results of research indicate the effectiveness of play therapy to abused brother and sister.

The relationships between siblings are the most long-lasting in families. When one of the siblings is a person with intellectual disabilities (ID), this relationship assumes an even more important role since this brother/sister will most likely become the disabled individual’s main caregiver. This pilot study had two aims: to explore the experience as an adolescent or adult sibling of a person with ID and to understand the perceptions of these siblings about quality of life as a sibling and about family quality of life. In-depth interviews were conducted with six siblings. The results showed that the experience of a sibling is positive and the acceptance process is of extreme importance. The domains which, from the sibling perspective, contribute to family quality of life are as follows: Family relationships, Acceptance, Health, Influence of values, Financial well-being, Support from others, and Leisure activities. The implications of these findings for intervention are pointed out.
