Abstract:
A sister and brother pair with immense mathematical reasoning ability is rare. This case study traces the early education of an exceptionally intellectually talented sister and brother who were identified by the Study of Mathematically Precocious Youth (SMPY) at the Johns Hopkins University. According to Dr. Julian Stanley, R and M are one of only two such pairs SMPY has identified. In addition, the experiences of the parents with education, both their own and their children's are examined. This account is based on interviews with each member of the Z family. In addition, the assistance of Professor Julian Stanley at The Johns Hopkins University is gratefully acknowledged. Keywords:

This chapter presents a Palestinian folktale focusing on relationships among siblings. Here, the brother and sister are put into situations that serve to increase their affection. Following the death of their mother, they become progressively more isolated and come to rely on each other more and more; indeed, their very survival depends on their mutual love and cooperation. To demonstrate the importance of this connection, the tale juxtaposes two relationships: sister/brother and wife/husband. Although the brother cannot be as a husband to his sister, equally important, a husband can never be as a brother to his wife. It is therefore as essential that the sister have her brother by her side as that she have a husband.

The wretched poet Keats was all along cherishing a kind heart of a poet towards his two brothers and a sister, helping generously with money his first younger brother George who was far away in America, keeping watch for months by the bedside of his second younger brother Tom till the patients departing from life calmly, showing his deep sympathy and dear love for his youngest sister Fanny who had long been caged in the house of her guardian Abbey, and composing for the world an ever lasting and mind agitated song full of brotherly affection and of friendship between a brother and a sister.

In JRS 97 Sabine Huebner argued that the brother-sister marriages in Roman Egypt could be explained as marriages between an adopted son and a natural daughter, a widespread family strategy in the Eastern Mediterranean. Remijsen and Clarysse now return to the traditional view that Egyptians did marry their full sisters. Ancient authors considered brother-sister marriages as a peculiarity of the whole Egyptian population and, moreover, papyrological sources do not prove any connection between adoption and brother-sister marriage. Neither the household size nor the onomastic pattern in families with brother-sister marriages are consistent with the usual adoption practices of the Eastern Mediterranean.
