    Aircraft self-separation is a concept in which the responsibility for aircraft separation is shifted from the ground to the air. To make self-separation possible the aircraft is equipped with an Airborne Separation Assurance System (ASAS). It is thought that with ASAS both capacity and safety will be improved. This article reviews an experiment in which the concept was tested using 24 pilots at the same time, flying together using PC-based simulators in a computer network. Results showed that separation can be maintained, even in extreme situations. Results also demonstrated that the pilot models used in computer simulation show behavior very similar to that of pilots in cockpit simulators. Finally, results also showed that in this simulation, pilot workload due to the extra task of maintaining separation is low. Competitive "gaming" among aircraft was not evident.

    Aerial safety separation is an important indicator to evaluate the flight performance of medium and low speed combination aircraft. In this paper, the concept of impact box and safe separation corridor will be introduced for the air separation problem of the composite aircraft, and a numerical method for quickly obtaining the safe separation area of the composite aircraft is proposed: the influence box-corridor method, and the suitable separation area generation of a composite aircraft will be studied by this method. The article introduces and simplifies the separation process of a certain type of combined aircraft. The concept of impact box and safe separation corridor and the logic and process of the impact box-corridor method are expounded. On this basis, the method is applied to determine the safe separation area of a single body of a composite aircraft through numerical simulation. Finally, the application of this method to the field of real-time separation of aircraft is extended.

    The purpose of this paper is to discuss en-route separation criteria applicable to the supersonic transport. Separation standards are described; equations are given and analysed which show the factors influencing separation; finally, suggestions are made for a supersonic transport air traffic control system for the North Atlantic. The discussion is concerned with longitudinal and lateral en-route separation in a non-radar environment, as opposed to radar separation in the terminal areas. The terminal problems are so complex as to require separate consideration and have been investigated by other authors. An appendix on the derivation of equations expressing statistical parameters of errors and estimated aircraft separation has here been omitted.

    We explored the effects of spacing in the levels of separation tested in a separation discrimination task. Participants indicated, for pairs of test circles, whether the separation between them was greater than a standard separation. A critical set of equally-spaced separation levels was tested in two conditions. In one condition additional separation levels were interleaved between the critical levels. In the other condition additional separation levels were not interleaved. Overall, the same average level and range of levels were tested in the two conditions, and the levels tested were equally spaced in both conditions. Critically, the levels tested were more closely spaced in one condition than the other. The sensitivity of the discrimination was greater in the condition with the more as opposed to less-closely spaced levels of separation. We suggest an explanation under which separation is assessed from the number of "separation fields" between the points at which the test stimuli register and under which the separation fields are smaller or more densely distributed when the levels of separation tested are more as opposed to less-closely spaced.

    This paper provides an initial analysis of conflicts among Urban Air Mobility aircraft and with traditional aircraft based on fast-time simulations of 20 full-day scenarios. Several sets of separation minima with added performance-based separation are applied, and the resulting separation conflicts are classified. Safety metrics relevant to separation standards are evaluated. The results shed light on future performance-based separation standards and safety metrics for separation standards involving Urban Air Mobility aircraft.

    This paper evaluates through Monte Carlo (MC) simulation a model of an airborne self separation concept which has been developed for use under low en route traffic conditions such as encountered over the Mediterranean area. In this self separation concept, each aircraft is equipped with an Airborne Separation Assistance System (ASAS) that proposes uncoordinated changes of its own aircraft path in order to resolve a conflict with the nearest other aircraft. For three encounter scenarios, probabilities for violating minimum separation and for near-mid-air and mid-air events are estimated through rare event MC simulation. The paper presents quantitative risk estimates for several scenarios, and provides an interpretation of these results for the model of the airborne self separation concept considered. This provides novel insight in the efficacy of airborne conflict resolution management, and shows that uncoordinated airborne self separation can be very effective in safely handling low density en route airspace. It also shows that events of multiple conflict clusters may grow in size more rapidly than an uncoordinated airborne self separation may be able to solve. The insight gained shows developers of airborne self separation which issues are key for improvement in order to safely accommodate future high en route traffic densities.
