Abstract:
We explored the effects of spacing in the levels of separation tested in a separation discrimination task. Participants indicated, for pairs of test circles, whether the separation between them was greater than a standard separation. A critical set of equally-spaced separation levels was tested in two conditions. In one condition additional separation levels were interleaved between the critical levels. In the other condition additional separation levels were not interleaved. Overall, the same average level and range of levels were tested in the two conditions, and the levels tested were equally spaced in both conditions. Critically, the levels tested were more closely spaced in one condition than the other. The sensitivity of the discrimination was greater in the condition with the more as opposed to less-closely spaced levels of separation. We suggest an explanation under which separation is assessed from the number of "separation fields" between the points at which the test stimuli register and under which the separation fields are smaller or more densely distributed when the levels of separation tested are more as opposed to less-closely spaced. Keywords:

Our challenging studies for prevention of separation were described and previous studies for controlling separation were reviewed. Future topics about the control of separation were discussed. It was pointed out that prediction of separation, saving energy for controlling separation and development of devices for controlling separation were important matters to be solved for establishing the control systems of separation.

Many high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) users are confronted with questions about how to improve upon the performance of an existing or recently developed method. These days, we have many technological options to consider, but how do we choose one (or a few) to try? The important variables that are most important for improving the speed of a separation are the maximum pressure available to drive the separation, and column temperature. Understanding the relationship between these variables and analysis time, and their effects on other choices made during method development, is helpful for developing methods that are both effective and time efficient.

The main application field and development situation of high gradient magnetic separation technology are emphasized according to the separation features of high gradient magnetic separation technology. The large number of research and application example shows that the high gradient magnetic separation technology has the wide application prospect in the separation of metal and partial non- metal,as well as the treatment of industrial wastewater, and so on. Finally, the development direction of high gradient magnetic separation technology is proposed.
