Abstract For use in emulsion and solution copolymerization a series of novel amino‐functional methacrylates has been synthesized, most of which have seldom, or never, been described in the literature before. In this investigation, the preparation of the hydrochloric and/or tosylate salt of the monomers aminoethyl, 3‐amino‐1‐propyl, 5‐amino‐1‐pentyl, 6‐amino‐1‐hexyl and 11‐amino‐1‐undecyl methacrylate will be described, along with the characterization of the parameters water solubility, pK a and chemical stability. The homopolymers of these monomers have been prepared and characterized. Results show the occurrence of an acyl migration upon neutralization of the monomers aminoethyl‐ and 3‐amino‐1‐propyl methacrylate. This migration does not occur in the monomer 5‐amino‐1‐pentyl methacrylate, which makes it possible to synthesize the neutralized monomer although, after neutralization, a Michael addition occurs, resulting in a limited lifetime. Copolymerizations have been performed in emulsion. The monomer aminopentyl methacrylate especially proved to be suitable for emulsion copolymerizations when used under controlled conditions. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Films Based on New Methacrylate Monomers: Synthesis, Characterisation and Electro-Optical Properties
Abstract A number of liquid crystal monomers based on methacrylate derivatives were synthesised by novel mild and solventless procedures under microwave irradiation. Their photo- and thermo assisted homo- and co-polymerizations with glycidyl methacrylate were investigated. The resulting polymers were characterised by NMR, GPC, DSC, and SEM to determine their structures and properties. The effects of the structures of the monomers on the electro-optical properties were correlated. For the first time, the graft natural rubber(NR) latex was produced by using 3-chloropropylene(AC)and methyl methacrylate(MMA).The effect of initiation systems, reaction temperature, reaction time, the ratio of MMA/AC,contents of initiator and NR latex concentration on the monomers conversion and monomers graft percent of graft polymerization had been studied. The results showed that the monomer conversion percent is lower with single AC,but the conversion increased largely with AC/MMA.The monomers conversion and the graft increased significantly with increasing the ratio of MMA/AC.The conversion and graft initiated by CHP/TEP is more than those initiated by KPS/TEP,KPS/FES,KPS/SHS.IR spectrum proved that the monomers AC and MMA had been really grafted onto NR.

Four kinds of succinoxy alkylene methacrylates with different lengths of alkylene groups were synthesized for use as bonding agents, and the bond strength of these monomers to polished dental alloys under dry and wet conditions was measured to investigate the effect of monomer structure on the bonding. There was no significant relationship between the monomer structure and the bond strength to precious alloys except for the Au-Ag-Pd alloy under dry conditions where the bond strength decreased with increase in the number of carbon atoms in the alkylene group. There was no significant relationship between the monomer structure and the bond strength to nonprecious alloys under dry conditions. However, the bond strength of the monomers with alkylene groups of 5 and 8 carbon atoms to the Ni-Cr alloy and that of those with short alkylene groups to the Co-Cr alloy, respectively, was higher under wet conditions.
