A polarimeter has been built for use with the Submillimetre Common-User Bolometer Array (SCUBA), on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) in Hawaii. SCUBA is the first of a new generation of highly sensitive submillimetre cameras, and the UK/Japan Polarimeter adds a polarimetric imaging/photometry capability in the wavelength range 350 to 2000 μm. Early science results range from measuring the synchrotron polarization of the black hole candidate Sgr A* to mapping magnetic fields inferred from polarized dust emission in Galactic star-forming clouds. We describe the instrument design, performance, observing techniques and data reduction processes, along with an assessment of the current and future scientific capability.Keywords:

This paper describes the channeled spectropolarimetry capable of the singleshot measurement of the state of polarization (SOP) of polychromatic light. A pair of fairly-thick birefringent retarders are incorporated into the polarimeter so that all the spectrally-resolved Stokes parameters can be determined at once from only a single channeled spectrum. The principle of this method as well as its application for the ellipsometric study of thin films are presented.

Polarimetry is an optical technique currently used in many research fields as biomedicine, polarimetric metrology or material characterization, where the knowledge of the state of polarization of light beams and the polarizing properties of polarizing samples is required. As a consequence, in such as applications it is necessary to use polarimeters which by means of radiomentric measurements, lead to the obtaining of some important polarimetric information. As is known, polarimeters include a state of polarization detector (PSD), which is typically formed by combinations of waveplates and polarizers. Then, intensity measurements corresponding to the projection of the analyzed state of polarization upon different configurations of the PSD used, leads to the determination of the polarimetric properties of light beams. Here, we have studied and optimized a polarimeter based on PSD system containing two electronically variable retardance waveplates. The variable waveplates are based on the Liquid Crystal Display technology, allowing the implementation of a complete polarimeter without mechanical movements.

A submillimeter continuum array instrument being built for the 15-m James Clerk Maxwell Telescope on Mauna Kea, Hawaii is described. The instrument contains 2 arrays, one of 91 pixels optimized for 438 microns and the second of 37 pixels optimized for 855 microns. Both are hexagonally close-packed, with each pixel having diffraction-limited angular resolution. Conical horns and single-moded waveguides are used to couple to the submillimeter beams, minimizing the bolometer background loading. A filter changing mechanism allows operations of the arrays at 350 and 750 microns. Single 'photometric' pixels are provided optimized for operation at 350, 600, 750, 1100, 1400 and 2000 microns. The instrument will have bolometers sensitive enough to reach the photon-noise sensitivity limit at both wavelengths, corresponding to an optical noise equivalent power (NEP) of 1.6 x 10 to the -16th WHz exp -1/2. This is achieved by cooling to 0.1 K, using a dilution refrigerator.

We have designed and built a fast and precise balanced polarimeter from components commonly found in undergraduate physics laboratories. Balanced polarimetry measures the orientation of linearly polarized light by splitting the beam into orthogonal polarization components and detecting each separately. Our polarimeter is capable of measuring the orientation of linearly polarized light with a precision of approximately 0.001°/Hz. The apparatus cost less than $1000. Measurements of the specific rotation of sucrose and of the Faraday effect were performed, both of which produced results that were comparable to previously reported values.

SCUBA-2 is a state of the art 10,000 pixel submillimeter camera installed and being commissioned at the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) providing wide-field simultaneous imaging at wavelengths of 450 and 850 microns. At each wavelength there are four 32 by 40 sub-arrays of superconducting Transition Edge Sensor (TES) bolometers, each packaged with inline SQUID multiplexed readout and amplifier. In this paper we present the results of characterising individual 1280 bolometer science grade sub-arrays, both in a dedicated 50mk dilution refrigerator test facility and in the instrument installed at the JCMT.
