This chapter starts people off by helping them to set up a host computer to run as a hypervisor, start running virtual machines (VM) on that hypervisor, and then learn how to migrate VMs to other hypervisors (in order to prevent downtime or just to grow capacity). In cloud computing, the operating systems serving cloud users are not running directly on computer hardware. Instead, hypervisors are configured to run many operating systems as what are referred to as VMs. Kernel-based Virtual Machine (KVM) is the basic virtualization technology implemented in most Linux distributions to make a Linux system into a hypervisor. KVM is supported on Ubuntu, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Fedora, CentOS, and many other Linux systems. The chapter describes how to check to see if a computer has the required hardware features to be used as a hypervisor and how to configure it to be used with KVM.

There are many requests from teachers to computer lab management staff in universities. The most annoying one is that both the Windows and Linux environment are required. To satisfy such a request, a dual-boot system is widely used. But on a dual-boot system, students must wait for minutes to switch between Windows and Linux. And management staff has to repeat the boot and shutdown process to apply patches to both operating systems. To provide both operating systems' environment simultaneously, we have decided to use coLinux to run Linux as a Windows application, and installed it in our PC classroom. coLinux, Cooperative Linux, is an open-source, lightweight solution, as compared to full virtualization techniques such as VMware or Virtual PC. Cygwin could be another solution, but it has some restrictions against the full capability of Linux such as process management. coLinux enables both native Linux applications and Windows applications to run simultaneously on the screen. Our solution also avoids incompatibility problems that sometimes occur between Microsoft Office on Windows and Office suites on Linux.

In this chapter, we look at installing Apache and PHP on a GNU/Linux operating system. This is a bit more involved than the Windows Apache install we covered in the last chapter, as it's done using a command line from a system shell.

VirtualBox is a cross-platform virtualization application. What does that mean? For one thing, it installs on your existing Intel or AMD-based computers, whether they are running Windows, Mac, Linux or Solaris operating systems. Secondly, it extends the capabilities of your existing computer so that it can run multiple operating systems (inside multiple virtual machines) at the same time. So, for example, you can run Windows and Linux on your Mac, run Windows Server 2008 on your Linux server, run Linux on your Windows PC, and so on, all alongside your existing applications. You can install and run as many virtual machines as you like—the only practical limits are disk space and memory.

William Hodges pointed out Grecian Architecture was not the most excellent architecture, in his "Dissertation." He gave his opinion that the first habitations had been brought to an architectural perfection while they had been influenced by the climate, the pursuits, the habits and the materials. He supposed the architectures had originated from the Hut (or Tent), or the Caverns. He thought the forces of Nature had formed the types of Architecture in the Caverns. There was an aesthetic element in his opinion. He thought Grecian, Roman, Chinese Architecture had originated from the Hut or the Tent. He thought Egyptian, Hindoo, Moorish and Gothic Architecture had originated from the Caverns, and these architectures had been brought to an equal perfection with Grecian Architecture. In his opinioin about Indian Architecture, there was the near idea of the theory of architectural origin.
