Wake Vortex Alleviation by Differential Flap Setting and Oscillating Flap Setting: A flight test

2009
In this article the results of a flight test experiment are presented. The effect of fixed deflected and periodically moved wing devices on the decay of wake vortices are investigated. With airborne LIDAR facility the measurement of the circulation and the sinking rates of vortices was performed. Additional to this, video tapes are analyzed concerning statistical distributions of vortex length scales were studied. The LIDAR measurements yield no significant impact on the vortex system which differs from atmospheric influence. In contrast to that, some results of the statistical analysis shows an indication for an influence of the motion of the wing devices on the vortices.
