A retrospective study on castration in equine.

In the present study last three years’ (2008–2010) retrospective information was retrieved by scrutinizing the data bank of the College Hospital. During the period, a total of 19655 new cases were registered, out of which 476 (2.42%) cases were of horses. Among the horses, 193 (40.54%) cases were referred to the Department of Veterinary Surgery. Out of these, 72 (37.30%) cases were of musculoskeletal system followed by 57 (29.53%) cases of wound, 27 (13.98%) cases of eye, 15 (7.77%) cases of fracture, 12 (6.21%) cases of castration, 6 (3.10%) cases of neoplasm, 2 (1.03%) cases of sinus, fistula and abscess and 2 (1.03%) cases were of urogenital problems. Among the total equine castration cases referred, elective surgery to control behavioural changes and aggressiveness was the major objective in 11 (91.66%) cases followed by a case of hydrocele (8.33%) in which castration was resorted for therapeutic resolution. The studies revealed that majority of the castrations were done in horses between 3–4 years of age accounting for 8 cases (66.66%). This was followed by 2 (16.66%) horses between 5–10 years, 1 (8.33%) horse of 2 years and 1 (8.33%) horse of 11 years. The cases of castration recorded in Marwari horses were 50% followed by Kathiawari (41.66%) and nondescript (8.33%) horses.
