The objective of the present article is to present an overview of the various existing classification schemes for the international industry, in which emphasis is given to scientific classification related to nomenclature, laws and properties, technological classification, related to patents as a form of technology protection and as a way to monitor trends, industrial classification, represented by industry associations which act as support for studies of productive chains, and economic activity and product classification, which is officially used by almost all governments.
