Deformation Analysis of a Local Terrestrial Network in Romania with Respect to the Vrancea Earthquake of August 30, 1986

1990
The future Siriu and Surduc hydroelectrical developments under advanced construction are located in the Vrancea area (45,0°-46,l° N latitude, 26,0°–27,8° E longitude), whose seismicity determines the dominant aspect of the Romanian territory seismicity. The seismicity of the Vrancea area may be compared to the Hindukush montains area (Pamir) and the Bucaramanga region (Columbia). Frequent earthquakes of intermediate depth (60–180 km) occur in this area, mostly within a depth of 130–150 km. The generally high energy of these earthquakes makes them to be recorded in large areas as monokinetic shocks (those of low intensity) and as multiple—phenomena shocks accompanied by aftershocks in case of high seismic events.
