Delinquency and the Amphetamines

1965
A study has been made of unauthorized amphetamine taking amongst adolescents admitted to the London Remand Homes. The methods of detection and their interpretation are discussed. Evidence of amphetamine taking was found in 16-18 per cent. of admissions and reasons are given for considering that the true proportion may be higher. Comparison of detected amphetamine takers with those in whom no evidence of drug-taking was found showed no major differences in a number of personal and environmental factors. Their offences and the seriousness of the offences were similar. The significance of these findings is discussed in relation to the general problem of delinquency.
