Abstract Detection of viral infections by the innate immune system is essential for the subsequent upregulation of host protective responses. This review will focus on the relevance of innate immune pathways in the induction of protective adaptive immune responses and will discuss the discrepancies often found between in vitro and in vivo investigations.
