The objective of this research was to study the health of the elderly living in thammapakorn Residential Home
in Chiang Mai which was done in association with the Nippon Medical School team from Japan. There was 92
volunteers, 43 males and 49 females aged over sixty years. The study revealed that the ten most prevalent problems of
this group of elderly were visual acuity abnormality 90.2%, anemia 68.5%, bone and joint disease 48.9%, hypertension
42.4%, cataracts 32.6%, presbycrusis 26.1%, diabetes mellitus 23.9%, dental caries 19.6%, digestive system disease
9.8%, and cardiovascular disease 8.7%, The prevalence of obesity, cognitive impairment and depression were 8.7,
55.4 and 23.9% respectively. The prevalence of hypercholesterolemia, hyperbetalipoproteinemia and
hypertriglyceridemia ware 39.1, 15.2 and 23.9 respectively. The mean hemoglobin, FBS, total protein, AST, ALT,
ALP, LDH, BUN, creatinine, uric acid and amylase were 11.91 + 1.60, 111.22 + 41.29, 7.7 + 0.76, 26.11 + 14.93,
12.58 + 10.15, 259.71 + 91.56, 222.37 + 96.19, 19.45 + 19.82, 1.05 + 0.47, 6.58 + 2.06 and 156.38 + 67.41
respectively. The study concluded that there was a high prevalence of visual acuity abnormality, anemia,
heperlipidemia, bone and joint disease and hypertension in this group of elderly. It was also observed that cognitive
impairment and depression was abnormally high. Recommendation of health care and further investigation should be
carried out for the health of this group of elderly.
