Satellite autonomous navigation using navsat GEO + HEO configuration

1987
Abstract The degree of on board navigation autonomy, pioneered by deep space missions, is expected to increase in the near future for a broad class of missions (i.e. low earth orbiting observation satellites, space stations, etc.). Conventional techniques based on ground stations, while not providing a real time navigation function, represent a complex solution. Therefore, in the frame of the European Columbus program, alternative techniques that would offer real time navigation have been investigated to identify a better technical and economical solution. The paper presents the potential navigation performances, for selected Columbus orbits, offered by NAVSAT GEO+HEO, a satellite based navigation system conceived and developed by the European Space Agency for civil applications.
