Nitric acid reaction of cyclohexanol to adipic acid

Abstract The reaction chemistry of the oxidation of cyclohexanol to adipic acid under the influence of nitric acid has been critically reviewed. With the traditional process maximum selectivity towards adipic acid is reached at a high degree of HNO 3 consumption. Only under particular reaction conditions can the nitric acid consumption be reduced without affecting the selectivity; certain conditions even lead to improved selectivity.
