Precision gamma scanner
1972
A precision gamma scanner (PGS) is used in the air cell of Hot Fuel Examination Facility/South at the EBR-II site to support the LMFBR irradiation programs. The PGS consists of an in-cell element-positioning stage, a variable-slit collimator, and a germanium-lithium gamma-detector system. Gamma scanning is supervised by a Datacraft 6024/3 computer, which operates the PGS on a 24-h basis without operator attention. Full automation of the PGS functions has made it possible to collect vast amounts of data that could not be collected manually. No multichannel analyzer is used in the system; instead, the nuclear analog-to-digital converter and other instruments are interfaced directly to the computer through the CAMAC standard.
