Performance Evaluation of Error Control Scheme in ETSI SmartBAN PHY

2018
This paper provides performance evaluations of an error control scheme in ETSI Smart Body Area Networks (SmartBAN) physical layer (PHY). In April 2015, the first edition of PHY and media access control (MAC) standards in ETSI SmartBAN were issued based on ultra-low power consumption, co-existence of systems and optimum control of Quality of Service (QoS). In the PHY, (127,113) BCH coding for MAC Protocol Data Unit (MPDU) and repetition of Physical-Layer Protocol Data Unit (PPDU) can be used as an error control scheme. However, effectiveness of these schemes has not been fully evaluated. In this study, error control schemes in SmartBAN PHY are evaluated under some conditions. Then, schemes applying other BCH codes which has the same redundancy as the packet repetition are also compared with the standard schemes. In addition, we evaluate the performance when retransmission is performed. Numerical results show that retransmission greatly improves the performance under the IEEE model CM3.
