Review on Advanced Research on Ceramic Materials in Ukraine

Ukraine was the main developer of Advanced Materials in the Former Soviet Union where dedicated research centers, pilot production facilities and industrial firms were located and still exist. Here, the first soviet synthetic diamonds were obtained and their industrial production was developed and established. Ukrainian industries of zirconia powders, boron compounds, refractories, alumina based materials, etc. were very large and significant and, in many cases, among the largest in the World. A few people recognize that Ukraine was the third world producer of synthetic diamonds and synthetic diamond based tools. Abrasives and tools based on boron nitrides, lanthanum hexaboride single crystalline electron emitters, that are produced in Ukraine, are recognized to be among the best in the World.
