FLC materials optimized for high resolution magnified view and projection applications

2000
Abstract CMOS-based microdisplays which use time-sequential color monopixels have a much higher fill factor and markedly better image quality than displays using triad subpixels. These microdisplays excel in applications requiring either compact viewers or projectors. This paper describes optical architectures used for incorporating microdisplays into near-to-eye and projector displays, and reports some figures of merit for the displays. It also describes the liquid crystal mixtures used in the displays, and details some LC dopants that can give these mixtures wider temperature ranges, faster switching speeds, and lower birefringence.
