A HEALTHIER CITY

2002
A project has been implemented in Naples, Italy to reduce both environmental and acoustic pollution by traffic management. The programme has four sections. The first is the development of a real-time information system to acquire and validate data, determine the state of air quality, create simulation models for forecasting environmental pollution, and to use expert systems to activate corrective actions for traffic or other pollution systems. The second and third sections address the development of automatic programmes to identify environmental and acoustic pollutants. The fourth section involves running the system and field validation. The main objective is to make a decision support system for emergency situations and for urban management. The project zone is described. Details are given of the real-time data collection system (cameras, real-time video, internet connection, cartography, centralisation). Strategies for improving traffic simulation modelling are outlined.
