HIV-related risk behaviors among migrant construction laborers and their associated risk factors

Objective To describe HIV risk behaviors and explore their associated risk factors among migrant construction laborers in Nangtong,Jiangsu.Methods Cross-sectional study was used.The survey was conducted among migrant construction laborers who participated in health examination before going abroad.A questionnaire was developed and used for collecting data including demographic and HIV related behavioral information.Prevalence rates and proportions were calculated to describe risk behaviors.Logistic regression was performed to assess associations between potential risk factors and reported high-risk behavior.Results A total of 1 825 were approached and recruited,1 625 finished survey with a response rate of 89%.Casual or commercial sex was the main high-risk behavior for HIV/STDs infection reported in the study population.The rates of casual and commercial sex reported were 15.8% and 14.2% respectively.Risk factors associated with high-risk sexual behaviors among migrant construction laborers were never working abroad(OR=0.745,P=0.043),being married(OR=0.338,P=0.004),age of initial sexual intercourse equal or more than 22 years(OR=0.437,P0.001),high sexual frequency(OR=1.298,P=0.043) and negative attitude toward multiple sexual partners(OR=0.437,P0.001).Conclusions The reported rates of HIV related high-risk sexual were relatively high.Appropriate interventions should be carried out to reduce the high-risk behaviors for the target population.
