MANUFACTURE AND TEST OF THE TORE SUPRA OHMIC HEATING COIL

1986
The ohmic heating coil of Tore Supra has been manufactured and tested at the BBC facility in Zurich. The 195 turns, 6.8 ton, 1.7 m high, 1.6 m O.D coil is made of four coaxial helical solenoids each of which includes six imbricated helices. The peak current is 40 kA, the maximum operating voltage is 20 kV and the upper temperature limit is 80° C. The Cu Ag 0.1 conductor hoop stress reaches 150 MPa and the design limits to 13 MPa the insulation shear stress in the critical zones.
