Smart Dental Projector Lamp For Pediatric Application

2020
—Children do not have the ability for independent brushing until around age sevenor eight and may lack dental hygiene. The dental management of children is critical and putpediatric dental surgeons under stress on examination. The main objective of this paper is tocontrol the dental projector lamp automatically, as it is difficult for the dental surgeons tomanually operate the lamp especially when the patient (child) frequently changes the position.Finding the position (mouth) of a child where the light needs to be focused, is done with thehelp of image processing technique and automated the movement control of the lamp with thehelp of the Raspberry Pi microcontroller. During diagnosis, the children cannot stick to theirpositions and shake their heads unknowingly, thereby the dental surgeons have to frequentlyadjustment the lamp. The paper focuses on locating the mouth and imaging the whole mouthand thus determining the position of the mouth, by a self-developed image-processingalgorithm. This information is sent to the microcontroller and converted into the signalswhich can be detected by the motors that are employed to move the lamp, both the x-axis aswell on the y-axis. These automated lamps facilitate pediatric dental surgeons to focus ontheir treatment despite disturbances caused by the patient.
