Multiuser 4×10 Gb/s bidirectional transmission with wavelength conversion using a single SOA

We investigate a transparent wavelength conversion based on four-wave-mixing (FWM) in semiconductor optical amplifier. We verify the effectiveness of the proposed scheme by analyzing the spectra and bit error rate. Then, we set up a 10-Gb  /  s single-user and 4  ×  10  Gb  /  s multiuser transmission by Optisystem and discuss their performance. The simulation results show that the FWM effect between the two waves achieves a 2.4-nm wavelength conversion. At BER  =  10  −  3 level, for single-user transmission the sensitivities of downstream (DS) and upstream (US) reach −23.6 and −23.4  dBm, and for multiuser transmission the sensitivities of DS and US reach −23.9 and −23.8  dBm, respectively.
