Preliminary design of the RF driven positive deuterium ion source at HUST

2020
Abstract Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) plans to develop a radio frequency (RF) ion source experimental setup for a high intensity neutron source which is at the conceptual design stage. The positive deuterium ion beam with the current of ∼14.5 A, the energy of 20 keV and the pulse length of ∼2 s is required. This paper introduces the RF driven deuterium ion source, and focuses on the design of the extraction systems. A triode extraction system is optimized to deliver the beam well inside the required divergence by means of ion beam optics simulation. Finite element calculations have been carried out to analyze the temperature and deformation of the electrode under heat power loads.
