Evaluation of Storage Capacity and Maturity of Potential Storage Sites in the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS)

2014
The CO2 storage atlas of the NCS was elaborated by the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (NPD). The atlas documents the distribution and properties of the main aquifers which are evaluated to have an interesting storage potential for CO2. Main objectives were to facilitate selection of sites which are suited for future CO2 sequestration projects and to document the total storage capacity of Norwegian sectors of the North Sea, the Norwegian Sea and the southern Barents Sea. In the study, regional maps were compiled and combined with detailed studies of interesting structures, geomodelling and reservoir simulations. Aquifers and cap rocks were characterized according to geological characteristics, exploration maturity and data coverage. The calculated storage capacities indicate that there is a large storage potential for CO2 in the North Sea sector, and sufficient potential for storage from local sources in the Norwegian Sea and the southern Barents Sea
