The evaluation of the effect of Jensen's procedure performed in patients with complete abducens nerve palsy

2013
Objective To evaluate the effect of Jensen's rectus muscle union combined with a medial rectus recession performed in patients with abducens nerve palsy. Methods Retrospective study of 14 patients that treated surgically at the first affiliated Hospital of Guangxi Medical University,Nanning,China, from July 2009 to October 2012 was done. All patients were performed Jensen's rectus muscle union combined with a medial rectus recession.Degree of palsy, corrected visual acuity, angle of strabismus in primary position, abnormal head posture and diplopia were analyzed preoperative and postoperative. Results Follow-up time was raged 3 to 43 months. There was a significant reduction in the deviation in primary position and increase in abduction preoperative and postoperative. The average corrected visual acuity was (0.22±0.35) preoperatively, and (0.49±0.43) postoperatively.70.0% patients had no abnormal head posture and 71.4% patients had no double vision in the primary position postoperatively.73.3% eyes were within 10△ of alignment. No patient developed anterior segment ischemia. Conclusions The Jensen's rectus muscle union combined with a medial rectus recession technique is a safe and efficacious therapy for complete abducens nerve palsy.
