TEST RESULTS OF THE HELIOTRON E POWER SUPPLY AND CONTROL SYSTEMS

1981
The power supply and control systems were developed for the Heliotron E, an experimental apparatus designed to investigate the possibility of a toroidal steady fusion reactor. They have the following special features and functions. (1) A 330 MVA MG set is used to feed all the power needed, in consideration of the small power receiving capacity of the system, relative to the large load. A vertical type generator with large inertia is used, which does not require a flywheel. (2) Thyristor type power supplies are used because they are convenient for control and maintenance. In particular, for the joule heating power source, a 40kV, 6kA thyristor circuit breaker is used in consideration of economics and performance. (3) A control system of the joule heating power source was developed, whereby plasma current is built up and maintained.
