A new nanostructured material for regenerative vascular treatments: Magnetic bacterial nanocellulose (MBNC)

Engineered 3D constructs with multifunctional properties are in great demand for tissue engineering applications. The aim of this research is to develop a unique hydrogel made of bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) that has been magnetically functionalized and rendered biocompatible for the purpose of rapid cellular localization and proliferation. Magnetic hydrogels integrated on intracranial stents is a new method for the treatment of brain aneurysms by accelerating the endothelialization process and reducing the healing time. Some authors [1] have postulated that a stent used as a tissue scaffold with a magnetic face directed at the aneurysmal neck would be the most efficient strategy. Moreover, authors like Dalby et al. [2] have shown that stem cell adhesion, differentiation, proliferation and gene expression can be enhanced by nanostructured biomaterials. Main results of both magnetizing and cells behaviour are in well agreement with above mentioned references.
