Action of anti-inflammatory agents upon blood and histopathologic changes induced by periarthritis in rats

1966
Abstract A correlative study and analysis of the blood changes with chronic inflammatory joint processes induced by sub-plantar injection of adjuvant has been made. Although the method of following the development of adjuvant disease by hind feet measurements is rapid and can be expressed quantitatively, it is felt that the incorporation of additional parameters as used in this study tends to greater reliability as to the assessment of the inflammatory process and reflects more substantially the efficacy of certain agents as to their suppressive action in this disease. Significant inhibition of the development of adjuvant induced inflammation and concomitant total or partial normalization of the blood picture, fibrinogen levels and various protein fractions occur when rats are treated with repeated administration of paramethasone, phenylbutazone, oxyphenbutazone, indomethacin, amethopterin and 6-mercaptopurine.
