REFRACTORY METALS AN ASSESSMENT.

1964
Abstract : The refractory metals (columbium, molybdenum, tantalum, tungsten) and their alloys offer attractive potential as metallic materials for high temperature applications. Their general characteristics (e.g., high melting point, ductile-brittle transition, oxidation characteristics) are discussed in relation to a critical assessment of the feasibility of their use in current and future aerospace applications. Coatings for oxidation protection, fabrication, and joining, are shown to be areas of technology limiting the use of these materials, and therefore requiring further efforts. In spite of the current limitations, the high temperature capability is being utilized and for some future applications, improvements in strength, ductility, and coating characteristics are expected to increase reliability and capability.
