Robust Bird-Strike Modeling Based on ALE Formulation Using LS-DYNA

2006
A model to simulate bird-strike events under various conditions is developed to establish a comparison between the LS-DYNA simulations using the Lagrangian and Smooth Particle Hydrodynamic finite element methods. Classical test data available in the literature and Lagrangian models were used for basis of comparison. Both numerical and graphical data were compared with the developed models using LSDYNA. The simulations considered in this work include frontal impact of soft-bodies in rigid plates, and angled impacts in a tapered plate; the bird was simulated as a cylinder. These simulations measured pressure and force distribution during impactevents. The results show good correlation to the experimental data, when the bird was modeled as a cylinder. For the solid sphere model available in the literature, the current developments provide good correlation with the experimental data. The development of these models allowed comparison between the Lagrange and SPH methods to the test data, and is the base for making a good judgment on which method is recommended to be used to simulate bird-strike events.
